What are the responsibilities and job description for the Instructor I - Early Childhood Program position at City of Westminster, CO?

The Instructor I - Early Childhood Program is responsible for assisting the lead instructor in providing a safe and developmentally appropriate preschool program in accordance with state guidelines. This position interacts with children between the ages of three and five in licensed preschool classes that are educational and recreational in nature. Classes range from two to three hours per class. Recreation staff have the primary responsibility of ensuring the safety of program participants. This position is classified as safety-sensitive due to the nature of the work. Employees in this position may be subject to random drug testing and/or heightened supervision per the personnel policies and rules.

We are posting this position to support the re-opening of our recreation facilities and programs to the public. Hours for this position will vary but are typically in varied shifts Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 12:15 – 4:00 p.m., or any combination of these days and hours as needed as a Sub.

The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each individual candidate. We are posting these positions to support the re-opening of our recreation facilities and programs to the public.

  1. Assists in planning and organization of class activities to develop fine/gross motor skills through games and educational means
  2. Complies and enforces the State rules and regulations of the Colorado Department of Human Services
  3. Provides a safe environment for preschool-age children
  4. Assists in maintaining and updating children's files on an as needed basis
  5. Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering the telephone, running errands, picking up supplies as needed, conducting activities and helping set-up tables and chairs
  6. Provides good customer service to parents of the children in class
  7. Monitors participants and enforces rules, regulations and safety precautions to prevent accidents
  8. Actively participates in all cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting procedures of all classroom supplies, toys, furniture, etc. on a daily basis
  9. Maintains regular and punctual attendance
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Attends staff meetings and trainings
  2. Ensures facility, materials and equipment are clean, well-maintained and safe at all times
  3. Administers first aid and CPR as necessary
  4. Promotes City of Westminster Early Childhood Program in a positive aspect to participants, parents, guests, and the community
  5. Reviews instructional content, methods, and student evaluations to assess strengths and weaknesses, and to develop recommendations for course revision, development, or elimination
Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job, and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City's discretion.Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications
Required:
  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • First Aid, CPR and AED certification within 30 days of hire
Preferred:
  • At least 18 years old and older
  • Three (3) months of previous job experience in a preschool class or similar setting
  • Experience working in a Colorado Shines program and have an up to date PDIS account with Colorado Shines
Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered.
Physical Requirements
This position requires a moderate degree of physical stamina and strength, including the ability to:
  • Frequently sit, stand and walk through a multi-level facility
  • Occasionally squat, bend, kneel, twist, climb, balance and reach over head
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push or pull items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds
  • Frequently use hands and fingers for fine manipulation; occasionally use light and firm grasp
  • Frequently see objects up close to perform office tasks and far away to observe activity for safety hazards or problems
  • Constantly use hearing to interact with guests and staff and recognize trouble outside of view
  • Occasionally use sufficient physical strength, stamina and agility to perform emergency work in various capacities
 
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is constantly performed indoors with occasional outdoor activity. Indoor and outdoor work is performed in a high public use, multilevel recreation facility where loud noise and multiple events and activities at one time may cause a distraction. Exposure to periods of high activity and stress under demanding conditions. The position requires a great deal of communication with City employees, the public, and outside agencies.
Required Materials and Equipment
Preschool supplies, furniture and sports equipment kept at City recreation facilities.

Candidates must be legally entitled to work in the United States and must successfully pass a criminal background check, reference check, and substance screen. There may be additional pre-employment requirements depending on the nature of the position.
