Traffic Maintenance Worker

Performs intermediate skilled trades work installing and maintaining street signs and markings, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the close supervision of the Assistant Traffic Signal Supervisor.   

Qualification Requirements

  • Installs, maintains, and repairs various traffic signs.
  • Sets up barricades for traffic maintenance.
  • Assists with road and lane closures.
  • Installs and reconditions road markings.
  • Performs duties associated with operation of paint truck.
  • Performs snow removal duties as necessary.
  • Provides assistance for special events and evenings as needed.
Education and Experience: Less than high school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and department policies, practices, and procedures; thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and departmental legal guides, recommendations, best practices, ordinances, and laws; thorough knowledge of vehicle maintenance reports; general knowledge of industry standard and department specific equipment; some knowledge of standard office and department specific software; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; ability to read maps; ability to work during inclement weather snow removal and special events as needed; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Physical Requirements: This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and tasting or smelling and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
Special Requirements

Within 1 year of hire:
Fork lift certification
Flagger certification
Flagging training
Valid NC driver's license – Upon hire.
Availability to work special events and snow removal as needed.
