POSITION SUMMARY and ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The position is responsible to assist the Engineering staff by conducting inspections, surveys, measuring quantities, collecting and implementing GIS data, mapping assistance, preparing reports and calculations, and performing research for various project types which may include roadway paving, stormwater, water and sewer, parking lot, sidewalk, and curb and gutter improvements for public and private construction. The positions will receive direction, guidance, and mentoring from technical and management staff within the Development Services - Engineering department.
- Provides inspection and oversight of the installation of public improvement projects and coordinates with City staff on related work.
- Performs on-site inspections to ensure conformance with engineering principles and construction standards.
- Assist staff with GIS attribute data collection and data entry
- Update existing GIS attribute data and migration of historic data
- Consults with engineers to discuss and resolve design and construction problems. Communicates with contractors and developers to coordinate construction activities and resolve construction problems.
- Composes correspondence and reports to contractors, developers and/or residents as needed to direct and/or coordinate improvement project completion.
- Assist with plan and calculations review associated with subdivisions, planned developments, and private developments.
- Uses photos and written reports to document existing conditions and compliance/conformance of work.
- Ensures compliance with Woodstock's Public Improvement Standards and Details, standard specifications for public works construction, including but not limited to: earthwork, sanitary sewers and water lines, irrigation pipes, storm drains, streetlights, electric, telephone, and dry utility trenches, paving and concrete flatwork, and bridges and structures.
- Monitors trenching for alignment and grade, manhole locations and compaction. Checks pipes, valves, and fire hydrants for proper location, type and operations. Monitors conflicts with other utilities.
- Inspects forms for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, ADA ramp compliance, and driveways.
- Reads and interprets engineering plans, specifications, and details, utility maps, work zone safety plans, and related plans and drawings for constructability to ensure compliance with project plans and specifications, and/or to advise contractors or developers of changes necessary for compliance.
- Compiles a punch list and monitors completion of punch list items.
- Works cooperatively with other City personnel on projects that involve and/or require involvement of other City departments.
- Answers and directs telephone calls. Takes and relays messages.
- Photocopies printed materials and runs blueprints. Faxes messages.
- Retrieves project files and searches for backup information.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Currently pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, GIS or other closely related field
- Completed at least one academic year of college coursework
- At least 18 years of age.
- A valid Illinois driver's license and good driving record
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to complete reports and calculations using Microsoft Word and Excel
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience using AutoCAD, ESRI desktop or ArcGIS PRO
