CIVIL SITE INSPECTOR
DEPARTMENT OF INSPECTIONAL SERVICES
CITY OF WORCESTER
The Department of Inspectional Services seeks to fill the vacancy of Civil Site Inspector. Under the general direction of the Deputy Building Commissioner, this position performs independently specific duties and provides supervision and guidance to other inspectors and staff members. This position is responsible for plan review and site inspection and approval for a variety of construction and development sites as required by state and local codes.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Working knowledge of City of Worcester Ordinances and relative enforcement of private property regulations.
- Thorough understanding of safety regulations related to assigned projects.
- Thorough understanding of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of buildings, roads, and other related structures.
- Thorough understanding of civil engineering principles, practices, and tools.
- Knowledge of zoning, subdivision control, and other laws and ordinances relevant to community development and construction projects.
- Working knowledge of surveying and drafting instruments and methods and the principles and practices of land surveying and drafting.
- Familiarity with review of development plans (site plans, parking plans, etc).
- Ability to interpret Massachusetts General Law (MGL), with specific knowledge of Chapters 105, 127, 139, and 143; and, Commonwealth of Massachusetts Regulations (CMR) 410.
- Self-starter who can work well both independently and in team environments.
- Proficient with personal computers, including but not limited to the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook), OpenGov, GIS mapping, and analysis.
- Proficient in computer-assisted design (CAD) and other design, data recording, and analyzation software.
- Ability to track and manage multiple projects.
- Ability to identify and solve complex problems.
- Ability to communicate and work with diverse populations, organizations, and interests.
- Ability to perform work in an office setting and outside under varied weather conditions.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or other directly related discipline PLUS three (3) years of professional experience in a directly related field; OR,
- o An Associate’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or other directly related discipline PLUS five (5) years of professional experience in a directly related field will be considered in lieu of the above mentioned requirements.
- Valid MA Driver’s License.
- Worcester residency is required within one (1) year of appointment. The City may waive the Worcester residency requirement per the City Manager’s approval.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working with contractors.
- Experience with regulatory reporting and/or permitting.
- Professional Engineer or Professional Land Surveyor.
SALARY RANGE: $35.65- $46.65 hourly, full-time, with an excellent benefits package.
