BASIC FUNCTION:

This position is responsible for head coaching duties that include management of all facets of the women’s soccer program including but not limited to: coaching, teaching, recruiting, budget management, administration, scheduling of competitions, team travel, practice sessions, hiring and supervision of assistant coaches, and compliance with all applicable rules and regulations. Additional administrative responsibilities may be assigned by the Director of CMS Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation (Athletic Director).

The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the role of athletics in the liberal arts college curriculum, and the integration of the student-athlete and coaching staff into the overall educational experience offered at The Colleges.

Teaching responsibilities include instruction of physical education courses, which are required of students. Additional responsibilities will include department wide duties as assigned. This is a full-time, non-tenure track, athletic faculty appointment.

The Joint CMS Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation Program is comprised of student-athletes from Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Scripps Colleges and offers a comprehensive program of regular physical education, intramural, recreational, club and varsity sports. CMS varsity teams compete in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), as a member of NCAA Division III. The Program is comprised is 21 varsity sports (10 men’s, 11 women’s) and supports a student population of over 3,200 and a student-athlete population of approximately 530.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Reporting to the Athletic Director, the head women’s soccer coach works both independently and collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Lead a competitive varsity women’s soccer program that promotes and models the values of leadership, scholarship, teamwork, discipline, commitment, resilience, positive sportsmanship, and high ethical standards.
  • Recruit and retain academically qualified student-athletes to the highly selective liberal arts institutions of Claremont McKenna, Scripps and Harvey Mudd.
  • Oversee all administrative aspects of the women’s soccer program. This includes, but is not limited to, budget management, prompt completion of all administrative paperwork, collaboration with CMS athletics staff in the areas of sports medicine, business operations, compliance, equipment, events, facilities, and recreation.
  • Schedule all contests; work in concert with fellow CMS coaches and staff for scheduling and event management.
  • Recruit and retain assistant coaches with values that are reflective of CMS Athletics.
  • Mentor and develop coaching staff to serve the goals and expectations of the CMS athletic program.
  • In collaboration with Athletic Administration, as well as staff at all three colleges, assist with building and maintaining relationships with alumni and other program supporters.
  • Teach physical education courses in the required Physical Education program, engaging students outside the varsity teams in fitness and recreational activity classes.
  • Engage as a faculty colleague with academic peers to promote Athletics as a significant co-curricular activity with important educational value.
  • Represent CMS Athletic Department and the women’s soccer program at college events, faculty meetings, and in committee assignments for CMC, HMC or Scripps Colleges.
  • Represent CMS Athletic Department and the women’s soccer program in a positive manner within the SCIAC as well as regionally and nationally.
  • In collaboration with athletics administrators, identify, evaluate, mitigate, and monitor risks to the health and safety of participants in athletics, recreation, and physical education. Conduct all operations with integrity, consistent with Claremont McKenna’s Institutional Statement of Ethics and Values.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

EDUCATION:
A Bachelor's degree is required. A Master’s degree is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of 3 years of coaching experience at the college/university level required. Five or more years preferred.

LICENSES:

  • USSF A License, UEFA equivalent preferred or demonstrated continuing education if highest licensure was obtained greater than five years ago.
  • A valid driver’s license is required to drive College-owned vehicles and the ability to be insured under the College’s authorized driver’s policy.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Heavy (up to 50 lbs.)

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.

Deploy professional skills, in collaboration with colleagues, to best promote the College’s strategic interests.

  • An evident understanding of the role of athletics in the liberal arts college environment is necessary along with proven experience in recruiting student-athletes to highly selective institutions.
  • Strong administrative, interpersonal skills, and computer/technology skills.
  • Significant interest and expertise in teaching physical education activity classes and the appropriate certifications in First Aid, CPR, AED.
  • Operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and PowerPoint) and associated professional software (such as Internet research, menu-driven databases). Demonstrate understanding of the use of technology/devices/equipment in assessing and improving division/department systems and processes to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrate effective, accurate and clear communication with excellent/strong verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, phone, and customer service skills. Follow all written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of projects/tasks/duties/assignments.
  • Use strong organizational and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and a keen attention to detail.

OTHER:

REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening work hours will be required. Travel will be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division. This is a 12-month position.

CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS:
Athletic Faculty – usually initial rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor.
