What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanic position at Clean Harbors?

Responsible for the maintenance and repair of all Heavy Handling units including Tractors, Trailers, and loaders. This position may be required to work overtime and will be responsible to maintain Company equipment both in the branch office/yard as well as to respond to service calls in various remote locations and client sites.

  • Perform all required maintenance and repairs to various types of rental equipment while working within the budget provided to you by management.
  • Perform maintenance which follows the manufacturer guidelines for service times and inspections by requesting additional information, as required, from the establishment in which the equipment was purchased.
  • Ensure all equipment in need for repair has been approved for repair by the Shop Superintendent or Branch Management.
  • Tag all equipment waiting for repair with a “red” flag until the work is completed, and "green" tag once completed and notify dispatch when repaired equipment is ready for use.
  • Assist the Shop Superintendent and Branch Management in the development of company wide “Best Practice” documents.
  • Provide insight and offer suggestions to assist Shop Superintendent and Branch Management with implementation and revision of any required training documents.
  • Respond to client and staff service phone calls in the office and/or shop and discuss maintenance and repair decisions with Shop Superintendent, as required, to ensure seamless communication and to keep management up to date on any issues.
  • Ensure expected completion timelines for various repairs are met and that equipment is repaired and sent out in a timely manner.
  • Ensure continuous communication with the Shop Superintendent and Branch Management to ensure priorities are set and deadlines are met in addition to assisting in the compilation of a formal priority list during busier months.
  • Timely and accurate completion of all required paperwork such as Work Orders, Inspections, and Inventory Sheets.
  • Provide support to the Shop Superintendent to track inventory and maintain cost controls on a monthly basis.
  • Ensure the shop area is kept clean, tidy and free of hazards at all times as per office expectations, reporting all hazards and near misses as appropriate.
  • Monitor all equipment to ensure it is in superior working condition to leave on a job or if it is in need of repair for safety reasons.
  • Supervise, train and mentor shop laborers, Truck Drivers who are working on their own vehicles and any registered apprentices in the shop, as required.
  • High School specialized training (Company provided) or 1 year college required.
  • 3 to 5 years experience required.
  • Class 5 driver’s license is required as well as a clean driver’s abstract.
  • Registered Journeyman Mechanic Certification required.
  • First Aid, H2S,and Confined Space Certification required. (Company provide)
  • Ability to work unsupervised.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Attention to detail, organizational skills, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to oversee, coach and mentor all apprentices and other shop laborers.
  • Knowledge of price ranges for equipment parts, and the ability to obtain the lowest prices.
  • Strong background in electrical and mechanical trouble-shooting.
  • Familiarity with the various types of diesel engines, multi-compartment units (air actuators, internal valves and manifolds on tanks), Titan and flow meter gauges.
  • Experience completing Commercial Vehicle Inspection Process (CVIP) inspections.
  • Experience performing and completing tank tests, (visual & pressure) to D.O.T. specifications.
  • Familiarity with budgeting, cost control, and maintaining an accurate inventory.
  • Experience in a shop environment and experience working as a Mechanic on and/or around Heavy-Duty equipment and repairs.
