Cleveland Play House (CPH) is seeking a Prop Artisan to join the production team for the 2024-2025 season.
Responsibilities Include
- Create, repair, and alter a wide variety of props, including but not limited to upholstery, painting, paper props, small electronics, foliage creations, and multi-material projects
- Quickly and effectively alter or repair props based on notes from rehearsal, tech, or show reports
- Construct, repair, and modify furniture, set dressing, and large-scale props built of wood, metal, or other materials
- Ability to build props from drafting and working drawings, identify suitable methods and materials for construction, make material and cut lists for projects, and estimate costs
- General maintenance and repair of the shop's tools, inventory, and shop space
- Pack vehicles, transport and load props in and out of the rehearsal hall and theatre spaces
- Work as a team with the other members of the prop shop, and help out with other prop projects as needed
- Maintain a safe and healthy work environment, and uphold the policies and procedures outlined in the Cleveland Play House Handbook
- Attend and participate in all assigned staff training sessions, department meetings, show specific trainings and potential committee groups within the organization.
- Follow all health and safety guidelines established by the theatre; report any unsafe conditions or practices to your supervisor immediately
- Embody the CPH core belief that each team member has value and should be treated accordingly. Professional behavior and representation of CPH toward staff, guest artists, and patrons is expected by all team members
- Cultivate a collaborative, inclusive, and anti-racist culture by building positive relationships with staff and guest artists, and immediately addressing instances of micro aggressive or harmful language or behavior
- Sewing and upholstery skills, including hand sewing, using home and industrial machines, sergers, and pneumatic staplers
- Familiarity with skills such as painting, staining, dyeing, molding and casting, and multimedia crafting
- Knowledge of historical time periods and design styles
- Fine woodworking skills, including knowledge of furniture building and repair, and small detail work
- Metalworking skills, including MIG welding, grinding, and shaping metal
- Comfort working with various power tools, including table saw, miter saw, wood lathe, belt sander, etc...
- Ability to lift up to 50lbs, work on ladders, and in powered lifts. Comfort with working at heights
- Ability to be an independent worker and problem solver
- Ability to collaborate and communicate with other members of the production team
- Hand drafting or computer drafting skills a plus
- Ability, or willingness to learn to drive and dock a 14' box truck
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with ever-changing priorities, while balancing quality and deadlines
