Essential Duties and Responsibilities: U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) provides immigration benefits through Service Centers, District Offices, Field Office, and Application Support Centers. They are seeking Certified Deaf interpreting services in 77 field locations throughout the United States.
- Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) Services to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) at hearings, interviews, naturalization ceremonies, information appointment and other as-needed events.
- Able to work collaboratively and professionally with other ASL/SE/CDI interpreters as necessary when event requires more than one interpreter.
- Ability to voice-interpret for those whose language skills are not adequate for legal circumstances.
- Ability to imitate nuances, tone information, inflection, and spirit of conversation to enable those requiring service to fully grasp intent of conversation.
- Courteous professional affect with Deaf and Hard of Hearing ‘client’.
- Coordinate with USCIS staff prior to hearing or event.
- Record all ASL interaction activity to allow for appropriate USCIS invoicing.
- Comply with Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Ethics.
- Occasional travel may be required.
- Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
- Fluency in American Sign Language.
- Certified or state-qualified in interpreting English to ASL, or other sign system.
- Certified or state-qualified in transliterating from ASL or other system to English.
- Minimum three years’ experience as ASL/SE interpreter.
- Registered with Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
- Certification through National Interpreter Certification or Certified Deaf Interpreter, or sate-equivalent certification or licensure.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers.
- Excellent computer proficiency (MS Office – Word, Excel and Outlook).
- Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service.
- Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.
- Ability to pass USCIS Office of Security and Integrity background check.
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Associate degree preferred
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
- Must be able to talk, listen, speak, and communicate clearly in English
