What are the responsibilities and job description for the Phlebotomist position at Clinicore?
Summary:
Our Phlebotomist will be responsible for serving patients by identifying the best method for retrieving specimens and preparing specimens for laboratory testing while adhering to all necessary safety requirements.
Essential Functions Including but not limited to:
- Verifies test requisitions; brings discrepancies to the attention of appropriate personnel.
- Verifies patient by reading patient identification.
- Obtains all proper DX codes and/or medical necessity information for all specimens collected.
- Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and/or finger sticks.
- Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing procedures.
- Collects therapeutic drug-monitoring assays by collaborating with nursing personnel to ensure appropriate drug dose to collection time.
- Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed.
- Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
- Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, nurses, or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.
- Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
- Adheres to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and CLIA standards.
- Other duties as assigned within the scope of responsibilities.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- High school diploma/GED required (Associate degree preferred)
- Must have 6 months experience.
- Legible handwriting is required.
- Excellent patient service and patient relationship skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
Certification and Licensure Requirements:
- Must possess the necessary credentials as required by state (i.e. phlebotomy certification, license, transcript of credit hours, etc.)
Skills:
- Analytical skills to perform calculations.
- Judgmental skills to identify and solve problems as well as handle difficult situations.
- Interpersonal skills to assist physicians, nurses and other personnel courteously and effectively.
- Skills to operate instruments/ computers using established protocols.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and with a team.
Typical Physical Demands:
Requires manual and finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Distinguishes and identifies color. Requires wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as, but not limited to, lab coats, gloves, face shields, and respiratory protection. May require frequent bending, standing and sitting for extended periods of time. May require repetitive manual motion such as but not limited to pipetting, capping and uncapping specimens. May require keying intermittently for four (4) hours a day. May require frequent walking, climbing of stairs and/or driving to various locations. May require occasional lifting and carrying of supplies weighing up to 35 pounds.
Typical Working Conditions:
Work environment includes conditions common to a hospital/laboratory environment, including working directly with potentially hazardous chemicals and/or patients with communicable diseases. Potential for inadvertent skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials possible. Generally works in an indoor, air-conditioned area.
