DIETITIAN / DIETICIAN
Part Time or PRN
$ 35 - $40 per hour

SUMMARY:
Coordinates the day-to-day clinical nutrition needs are provided to the residents by the Dietary Department.
DELEGATION OF AUTHORITY:
As the Registered Dietitian, you are delegated the administrative authority, responsibilities, and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties.
EMPLOYMENT AT WILL:
Employment with Fahrney-Keedy is “at will.” Either the associate or Fahrney-Keedy may terminate the employment relationship for any reason at any time without notice, regardless of the length of employment or the granting of benefits of any kind, including but not limited to benefits which provide for vesting based on length of service.
CONFIDENTILITY:
Fahrney-Keedy associates recognize that Fahrney-Keedy has and will have information regarding financial, personal, and medical affairs and other vital information (collectively, “information”) which are valuable, special, and unique assets of Fahrney-Keedy. Associates agree that they will not at any time or in any manner solicit, collect, or divulge any Information to any third party without the prior written consent of Fahrney-Keedy. This information is Company property which may not be disclosed outside the facility unless properly released for publication. Associates will protect the Information and treat it as strictly confidential. Associates should not discuss Fahrney-Keedy affairs with others.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Evaluates and implements recommendations from established committees as they may pertain to food and nutrition services.
Serves on, participates in, and attends various committees of the facility as required or as appointed by the Administrator.
Provides written and/or oral reports of the food and nutrition services programs and activities as required or as directed by such committees.
Attends department head meetings, etc., as scheduled or as called.
Schedules and announces departmental meeting times, dates, places, etc.
Reports known or suspected incidents of fraud to the administrator.
Assesses the nutritional needs of residents.
Develops and evaluates regular and therapeutic diets including texture of foods and liquids to meet the specialized needs of residents.
Assists in the scheduling of assessments and care plans to be presented and discussed at each care plan committee meeting.
Encourages the resident/family to participate in the development and review of the resident’s assessment and plan of care.
Ensures that all food and nutrition services staff are aware of changes in the resident’s care plan when dietary needs are modified or changed.
Reviews nurses’ notes to determine if the dietary care plan is being followed; discusses problem areas with the Director of Nursing.
Participates in completing, coding, and revising the Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) to ensure the resident’s dietary needs are met.
Develops a written dietary plan of care that identifies the dietary problems/needs of the resident and the goals to be accomplished for each dietary problem/need identified using the RAI and other authorized facility assessments; reviews goals for modifications, as necessary.
Ensures that substitute foods of similar nutritive value are provided to residents who refuse foods served.
Assists in planning mealtimes appropriate to the resident’s needs/wishes.
Ensures that care plans identify any special equipment/utensils that resident may need (e.g., plate guard, enlarged silverware handles, etc.) to promote independence in eating.
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:
Reviews the dietary requirements of each resident admitted to the facility and assists the attending physician in planning for the resident’s prescribed diet plan.
Reviews and develops a plan of correction for any food and nutrition services deficiencies noted during state/federal surveys and provides a written copy of such plan to the Administrator for his/her approval.
Assists the Certified Dietary Manager in planning menus, work schedules, etc., as required.
Assists in developing diet plans for individual residents based on the comprehensive assessment and care plan along with the resident’s preferences and stated goals.
Interviews residents or family members to obtain diet history, as necessary.
Involves the resident/family in planning dietary objectives and goals for the resident.
Participates in obtaining history of resident’s food likes and dislikes.
Reviews therapeutic and regular diet plans and menus to assure they are following the physician’s orders.
Assists in planning the food and nutrition portion of the resident’s discharge plan.
Performs administrative duties such as completing necessary forms, reports, evaluations, studies, etc., to assure control of equipment and supplies.
Coordinates food and nutrition services activities with other related departments (i.e., nursing, environmental, activities, social services, etc.) as necessary.
Maintains communication with families and residents.
Assists in planning regular and special diet menus as prescribed by the attending physician.
Develops and implements person-centered education programs involving food and nutrition services for all facility staff.
Meets with administration, medical and nursing staff as well as other related departments in planning food and nutrition services programs and activities.
Participates in the quality assurance and performance improvement (QAPI) when food and nutrition services are involved.
Develops, implements, and maintains an ongoing quality assurance program for the food and nutrition services department; assists the QAPI Committee in identifying and correcting any food and nutrition services deficiencies.
Maintains a reference library of written material, current Food and Drug Administration food code manuals, Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) regulations, diet manuals, etc., necessary for complying with industry standards of practice and OBRA regulations and that will help in maintaining quality food and nutrition services.
Visits residents periodically to evaluate the quality of meals served, likes and dislikes, mealtimes, bedtime snacks, food substitutions, etc.
Participates in facility state/federal surveys (inspections) as directed.
SAFETY & INFECTION CONTROL:
Assists the Infection Prevention and Control Committee in the development, implementation, and revision of food safety and sanitation procedures, as necessary.
Follows established safety precautions in the performance of all duties.
Reports all safety violations.
Reports work-related injuries or illnesses and/or occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals to your supervisor.
Practices appropriate handwashing and use of hand sanitizer.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an associate may encounter while performing the essential duties of this position. RESIDENT RIGHTS:
- Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information including protected health information. Report known or suspected incidents of unauthorized disclosure of such information.
- Ensure that you treat all residents fairly with kindness, dignity, and respect.
- Ensure that all nursing care is provided in privacy.
- Knock and wait for permission to enter all residents’ rooms.
- Report all grievances and complaints made by the residents to the Nursing Supervisor or Charge Nurse.
- Report all allegations of resident abuse and/or misappropriation of resident property to the Fahrney-Keedy Abuse Coordinator.
- Honor the resident’s refusal of treatment request. Report such requests to your supervisor.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be licensed in accordance with current applicable standards, codes, labor laws, etc.
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
- Must be a supportive team member, contribute to and be an example of teamwork and team concept.
- Must possess leadership ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other staff.
- Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.

- Must have the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret programs, goals, objectives, policies, procedures, etc.

EDUCATION
- Must possess at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major studies in food and nutrition, management, or equivalent.
- Must be licensed in accordance with the laws of Maryland and registered with the American Dietetic Association.
PRIOR/RELATED EXPERIENCE:
- Must have a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in long-term care or assisted living
PHYSICAL & SENSORY REQUIREMENTS (With or Without the Aid of Mechanical Devices):
- Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
- Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner.
- Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
- Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function to ensure that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
- Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, staff, and support agencies.
- Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility, which include a medical and physical examination.
- Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and, at times, hostile people within the facility.
- Must be able to push, pull, move and/or lift a minimum of twenty-five pounds to a minimum height of five feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of fifty feet.
- May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
