Description of Work Unit
The Colorado State University, Veterinary Teaching Hospital exists to providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community while educating the next generation of veterinarians. Critical Care Services (CCS) provides medical care for small animals and exotics on an emergency basis and intensive 24 hour care to patients who are admitted for extended treatment. We simultaneously provide clinical instruction to professional veterinary medical students, interns, residents, veterinary technicians, graduate veterinarians, and others, conduct and support clinical research, and provide referral outreach to clients and referring veterinarians.

Position Summary
This position, the CCU supervisor, is critical to leading a team of highly skilled veterinary technicians, working in a fast-paced, high-acuity area of the VTH. The scope of this position will include creating a culture of acceptance and collaboration resulting in high performance staffing with reduced turnover and high morale. As a leader for this group as well as within the VTH, it is expected this position will exhibit the necessary qualities to build, lead and retain a highly functioning team. This may include acquiring and leveraging necessary resources, optimizing personal and professional growth and ensuring clear and collaborative communication to affirm expectations and create a climate of consistent quality patient care. Strong people skills – communication, empathy, understanding workforce to workload and managing crisis management for staff – will be required.
Additionally, it is recognized that there are significant challenges attracting and retaining well-skilled veterinary technicians into the emergency and critical care field. This Supervisor position will be expected to work with the VTH HR for maximum recruitment and retention to maintain a stable staffing level and to keep staff vacancies at a minimum. Working with VTH HR and leadership will be critical to staying informed and updated on the emergency market for salaries, staffing trends and pivoting to meet internal needs.

Minimum Qualifications
To be considered for this position, candidates must demonstrate the following in the application document:

  • Four years of experience working in a veterinary emergency room or critical care unit.

Duty/Responsibility
  • This position is the technical expert who is consulted by veterinary students, VTI, VTII, and VTIII technicians, technician students and doctors on technical procedures, protocol and potentially medical information.
  • Effectively provides efficient, optimal patient care including: triage, assessment, stabilization, treatment, monitoring, and restraint.
  • Identifies critical and relevant changes and recommends adjustments to patient’s management.
  • Collaborates with students, interns, residents, clinicians, and clients to assist in formulating a diagnoses and optimal treatment plan. This is done by evaluating patient status, response to therapy, collecting diagnostic samples and interpreting results.
  • Assumes leadership in emergencies in absence of DVM.
  • Utilizes advanced medical knowledge and expertise to provide onsite or phone triage/screening for ill or injured animals presenting to the Critical Care Services.
  • Communicates and coordinates with other hospital services to facilitate timely, efficient assessment, diagnostics, stabilization, treatment and/or transfer to appropriate hospital services.
  • Provides medical updates and concerns to primary and ancillary clinicians, students and other staff to coordinate patient care.
  • Enters patient charges into computer; provides after-hours hospital support and facilitates emergency patient admission.
  • Determines criteria for placing cases in a particular charge category
Specific Duties Include:
Provides clinical and technical expertise such as intravenous catheter placement (peripheral and central catheters), arterial, and urinary catheterization; fluid and drug administration; intravenous and arterial blood sampling/catheterization; performs focused assessment with sonography for trauma (FAST); EKG and blood gas collection/interpretation; direct and indirect blood pressure monitoring/evaluation; pulse oximetry; capnography; operation and trouble-shooting of all specialty-related equipment; thoracentesis and continuous evacuation; pericardiocentesis; emergency anesthesia; cystocentesis; multi-parameter monitoring; positive pressure ventilation and initiating and directing CPR.

This position provides Critical Care Unit supervision for all veterinary technicians on all shifts. Supervisor will directly oversee and manage the needs and dynamics of all shifts in the Critical Care Unit. High-level leadership, communication and positive outlook are all critical attributes for success as the Supervisor in this unit. This position is responsible for setting the tone in the room and modeling creative, inclusive and effective leadership for all technical staff and students reporting directly to, or assisting in, the Critical Care unit. This position is responsible for administering performance reviews, managing disciplinary issues, approving leave requests, reconciling TimeClock and monitoring leave banks. Responsibilities include attending in-service and hospital meetings as well as appropriate training. The supervisor must ensure information is communicated back to the CCU staff. This includes, but is not limited to, service staff meetings, CCS leadership meetings, CCU leadership meetings, VTH hospital-wide meetings, VTH leadership development trainings and quarterly budget meetings. Additional time committed to participation in regional or national groups will be encouraged, and may be tempered by bandwidth and overall health of the unit. This position provides documentation to support recommended corrective and disciplinary actions to include Letters of Expectation, PIPs and fully executed, HR-approved corrective action. This position will model collegiality, teamwork and leadership for all team members. This position will be a point of contact by other VTH services to discuss issues and protocols that may need to be created and/or amended within the Critical Care Unit. They will serve as the resource and the technical leader for the Critical Care Unit technicians and VTH team empowering higher level technicians to uphold policy, and procedure to also lead by example. Will create policy and procedure for the unit and consistently uphold VTH and unit-specific policies and procedures. This position will be the go to person for identifying and ensuring training, clarification, review and compliance therefore creating an environment of operational efficiency and success.
Organizes and directs activities of Critical Care Unit during all shifts. Manages staff performance and compliance for all shifts. Prioritizes communication, patient care and compliance; ensures completion and documentation of treatments; creates and enforces policies and procedures (including enforcement of biosecurity and controlled substance regulations); models and promotes professionalism and positive interpersonal relations and communications, especially under stressful conditions.
This position is critical in setting the tone and culture in the unit. Working closely with all staff, exhibiting equality and compassion in scheduling, assigned tasks, performance expectation, communications and resolutions of conflict are paramount for building and retaining a strong and resilient team. Setting the example and teaching others to follow the chain of command, discuss areas of misunderstandings or conflict resolution and to ensure confidentiality in all things is equally critical. Positive and professional effective leadership is expected. This position will work collaboratively and delegate to other senior technicians on the service to ensure the following:
  • Initiate the hiring process, interview applicants, hire candidates and recommend promotions or transfers.
  • Inspire creativity and flexibility to accomplish individualized learning for technicians which may include development of training manuals and online learning activities.
  • Create a climate of consistent quality patient care.
  • Optimize personal and professional growth of the staff.
  • Ensure clear and collaborative communication to affirm expectations.
  • Budget and manage financial performance of the Critical Care Unit.
  • Maintaining the critical care technical staff clinic schedule.
This position will be expected to manage on-call responsibilities for the unit, and may occasionally need to cover on-call shifts if staffing is challenged.
