Job Duties
Do you enjoy working hands-on? Are you knowledgeable of geologic concepts, terms, and practices? Do you have experience in mineral and energy resource investigations? Then look no further! The Virginia Department of Energy, Geology and Mineral Resources program, is seeking a Geologist to develop maps, reports, databases, and web content that support the development and conservation of mineral and energy resources in a safe and environmentally sound manner to support a more productive economy. The successful candidate will complete grant-funded investigations that support critical mineral and energy projects. Current projects focus on rare earth element minerals in the Virginia Fall Zone and the potential for the extraction of critical minerals during carbon sequestration. This position is grant funded with federal funds extended through January 2026. The continuation of funding beyond this date is contingent upon the availability of grants.
Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate should have the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience in order to qualify for this position:
• Knowledge of geologic research and economic geology principles and practices
• Ability to plan and perform geologic investigations
• Ability to interpret geologic data and communicate results to the public, industry, government agencies, and other interest groups
• Ability to prepare and edit maps and manuscripts using personal computers in a Windows OS environment
• Strong competency in geographic information system (GIS) software
• Demonstrated ability to handle multiple responsibilities, organize and prioritize workflow
• Ability to work independently and as a team member and complete assignments within established timeframes
• Ability to work in the field, navigate over rough terrain (i.e., stoop, crawl, and bend)
• A valid driver’s license with a good driving record
The individual accepted for employment will have to pass a drug test and successfully complete reference checks as part of the Virginia Energy pre-employment process.
