VDOT’s Bristol District is seeking a highly qualified Traffic Signal Technician to perform traffic signal maintenance in accordance with established safety standards, policies, procedures and operational standards.
The qualified candidate will:
Monitor and troubleshoot computerized traffic signal systems and devices.
Make required timing and data changes using automated systems/software and other tools.
Responds to complaints and emergency traffic signal malfunctions.
Troubleshoot control cabinets and other auxiliary traffic control equipment using wiring diagrams and intersection prints.
Conduct routine checks of signal components and perform preventative maintenance and repairs.
Communicate effectively with the public and police departments regarding traffic signal operations and repairs.
Have the willingness and ability to serve in an on-call rotation as well as work outside normal business hours and during emergency conditions is required.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of traffic control devices, signal equipment, and their operation.
Knowledge of traffic signal maintenance and operations.
Knowledge of management of systems to include timing plans, graphic designs, and computer use.
Ability to plan, coordinate, and prioritize multiple competing assignments.
Ability to maintain detailed and accurate records.
Ability to use electronic diagnostic tools/equipment, as well as hand and power tools.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with internal/external customers
Ability to work at heights and in heavy traffic conditions.
Solid experience in the use of computers and traffic signal related automated systems/software.
Skill in equipment fabrication, operation and repair of electronic test equipment.
Ability to physically perform hands-on inspections of signals/components, use required tools, work at heights, in confined spaces, in proximity of moving traffic and in inclement weather.
Ability to serve in an on-call capacity and respond to emergencies within a specified time period.
Experience using bucket trucks or other aerial lift devices.
Valid driver’s license required.
IMSA Traffic Signal Level I Technician and Intermediate Workzone certifications or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.
Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and VDOT rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards.
Fundamental knowledge of the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual, MUTCD, and the
VDOT Road and Bridge Standards.
Ability to read, understand, and interpret Traffic Signal design and Control Cabinet wiring diagrams.
IMSA Traffic Signal Level I Technician Certification.
Communication equipment installation and testing and inventory management experience preferred.
Electrical Licensing.
Experience operating and working in a bucket truck.

This position is required to perform 24 hour repair in a rotating schedule and must be willing to work in emergency situations and outside of normal work hours to include nights, weekends and overtime. It also requires unrestricted mobility, working in all types of weather, terrain, traffic, and standing for long periods of time. The ability to lift up to 50 pounds is required.

VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
