Title: Volunteer Coordinator
Division: Programs Department
Supervisor: Programs Director
Position Description: The Volunteer Coordinator oversees all aspects of the volunteer program, including: communications, recruitment, training, retention, and placement of volunteers. The Volunteer Coordinator serves as the on-site point of contact for volunteers, supports communication between volunteers and various departments/ programs, and ensures departments/programs are able to meet their volunteer needs.
Essential Job Functions: Specific duties of the volunteer coordinator are, but are not limited to:
- Actively recruit volunteers through the use of the website, print media, and events.
- Research, devise, and implement effective volunteer recruitment and retention strategies.
- Train, mentor, and serve as the initial primary contact for all volunteers.
- Prepare for, schedule, and provide regular volunteer orientations. 4-6 per month
- Keep all volunteer materials and program information up to date, and provide all volunteers with appropriate materials.
- Develop and maintain advanced or specialized volunteer programs and training to ensure continual growth of the volunteer program.
- Manage the volunteer database using Better Impact (trainings, hours, and acknowledgments)
- Ensure all volunteers have signed the necessary forms, are reporting their hours, and remain active.
- Organize formal and informal volunteer appreciation efforts.
- Create and send out a monthly newsletter to volunteers and foster parents to keep them informed about events, programs, and general needs.
- Work with corporate and community groups on volunteer opportunities at CAA.
- Coordinate with coordinators and management team to determine where volunteer staffing is most needed and most effective.
- Keep all staff up to date on changes to volunteer programs: provide staff training for volunteer program procedures as needed: ensure that staff are providing accurate information to volunteers.
- Uphold the shelter’s values and mission statement during interactions with the public and other staff.
- Grow and implement new volunteer programs to support and/or reduce the work of paid staff and to reduce strain on overburdened programs.
Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Experience working with volunteers is preferred.
- Verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking; ability to effectively communicate.
- Interpersonal and team-building skills
- Must be organized, resourceful, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and have the ability to multitask.
- Valid driver’s license with access to reliable transportation
- Minimum of high school diploma or GED
- Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to read and interpret policies and procedures.
- Ability to learn and quickly adapt to changes in programs and procedures.
- Ability to meet physical demands.
- Working knowledge of breeds, disease, animal handling, and behavior.
- Be safe and confident around animals.
- Ability to have a flexible schedule and work weekends.
- Knowledge and ability to accurately work with detailed information in paper and computerized format.
- Ability to communicate skillfully and effectively with diverse staff, volunteers, and community in a professional, pleasant, respectful, and courteous manner.
Physical Demands: The work is performed in all areas of the shelter. Typical positions require workers to walk or stand for short to moderate periods of time, lift and carry up to 40 pounds, climb stairs, bend, reach, hold, grasp, and turn objects.

This is a full-time position. Tuesday - Saturday Schedule
