A Project Director oversees project managers and project departments for Constructable. His or her duties include identifying strategic opportunity, setting direction for projects overall, informing senior leadership of trends in construction, helping set the vision and direction of the projects team, and being a trusted resource for clients’ or stakeholders’ project needs and goals. Project Directors ensure the successful completion of projects in their department and under their care and that the project managers are producing work product that is on schedule, under budget, and meeting or exceeding quality specifications and safety requirements.
Project Director duties and responsibilities
- Leading his or her specific project department's direction
- Setting key KPIs and metrics for his or her project department
- Overseeing all project managers in his or her project department
- Planning and implementation of all projects in his or her project department
- Implementing and enforcing quality control and quality assurance measures on all projects under his or her care

- Analyzing data to provide strategic insight and direction
- Oversight of all project deliverables and documentation
- Oversight of reporting project progress

- Positioning key team members in areas where they will succeed best on projects
- Making strategic decisions on the most difficult problems and important projects

Project Director Educational Requirements
To qualify for the role, a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is a requirement. Other valuable certifications include Advanced Project Manager Certification (APMC) and Certified Project Manager (CPM).
A bachelor’s degree in management or a related course of study is required for a Project Director. An MBA can also work as a substitute for a bachelor’s in management or a business-related bachelor’s degree.
A professional engineering license in a related field is a bonus.
Project Director Experience Requirements
Previous experience as a Senior Project Manager, Project Director, or a similar role is highly desirable. Candidates must have a deep background in productive, efficient project management and team leadership. The candidate should also be expert in project management tools like Gantt Charts and collaboration tools like ConstructionOnline, Microsoft Project, and others.
The candidate should also have demonstrable proof of managing staff effectively, including hiring and recruiting practices. The successful candidate should have leadership abilities with excellent problem-solving and independent decision-making skills. Experience with productivity and communication tools is also desirable.
