Job Purpose
The Assistant Director for Events & Operations is responsible for leading all event planning and logistical aspects of an exemplary program of new student and family orientation and year-long transition programs designed to integrate students and their families into Gonzaga’s Jesuit Catholic university community, promote belonging, and facilitate academic success and retention. These programs include, but are not limited to: New Student Orientation, Parent & Family Orientation, Welcome Weekend, and Fall Family Weekend. As a member of the New Student & Family Programs leadership team, the Assistant Director will develop and strengthen partnerships within and across divisions and work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and community partners to support inclusive programming for a diverse population of new students and families.

The budgeted annual salary that the University reasonably expects to offer for this position is $58211 – $58769.

Function Details

Lead the development, delivery, and evaluation of orientation and transition-focused programs for more than 1500 new undergraduate students and their families.

Lead the planning and implementation of Gonzaga’s Fall Family Weekend, hosting over 4000 students and family members on campus.

Create pathways for students of diverse identities to belong and succeed at Gonzaga by designing programs that promote wellbeing, inclusion, and integrated educational experiences for new students and their families.

Maintain awareness and management of programming budget in excess of $200,000.

Routinely communicate program and student needs and progress to campus constituents.

Adapt changes to programs by projecting trends and future needs of students and the field of orientation, transition, and retention.

Engage faculty members’ input on transition program planning and vision and create opportunities for campus-wide participation in new student and family programming initiatives.

Negotiate goals, procedures, and planning details with stakeholders.

Seek out and defer appropriately to campus experts in other functional areas.

Solicit new partnerships that strengthen program offerings.

Assist in the logistics and communication regarding parallel orientation programs, including Transfer Orientation, International Student Orientation, Honors Pre-Orientation, and other Student Affairs based extended orientation programs.

Develop emergency response processes and protocols in accordance with institutional directives, understanding the impact of procedures on the physical and emotional safety and security of constituents.

Plan and implement opportunities for educational sessions and engagement throughout the year led by various campus partners, including first year experience programs that support an Integrated Jesuit Experience.

Apply knowledge of student development theory and practice to inform decisions, methods, and strategies.

Engage a wide variety of constituents, including students, faculty, staff, administrators, parents, and higher education leaders and community agencies.

Aid in hiring, training, and supervision of student planning teams, orientation leaders, graduate interns, and student volunteers.

Assess institution’s access barriers and pathways as it impacts orientation, transition, and retention within diverse populations.

Utilize thoughtful written and verbal communication skills for a variety of audience sizes and types, including in-person, electronic, and social media avenues.

Work collaboratively with Student Affairs, faculty and other colleagues across campus.

Have the competency to analyze, interpret, apply, and follow policies and procedures.

Represent the university and department with tact and diplomacy at all times.

Minimum Qualifications

BA four (4) years of full-time professional work in college student affairs or eight (8) years of related professional work experience in college student affairs experience if substituting experience for education requirement.

Demonstrated experience in delivery and assessment of programs and events for a diverse group of constituents.

Demonstrated organizational, leadership, communication, and public relations skills.

Ability to work autonomously; take initiative and able to think critically and creatively to solve problems.

Strong collaboration skills with a team focus.

Ability to plan, implement, and assess complex programs.

Ability to cultivate and maintain effective, cooperative working relationships with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and administrators.

Comfort with learning and using new technology and/or experience with various forms of technology including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Banner, Microsoft Office, etc..

Desired Qualifications

Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Student Affairs, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field.

Experience leading, supervising and/or managing college students.

Understanding of challenges and barriers faced by communities around ethnicity, race, class, gender, privilege and oppression.

Knowledge and understanding of the issues surrounding equity, diversity, inclusion, implicit bias, institutional racism, and other systemic oppressions.

Be a self-starter with strong organization and time management skills, with the ability to balance multiple priorities, efficiently multi-task, work under pressure, handle interruptions, and meet deadlines.

Demonstrated leadership and experience in a higher education setting working with orientation and transition programs designed to increase student engagement and retention.

Experience at Gonzaga University or another Jesuit or mission-based institution.
