QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Accredited by AHIMA (CCS) or (CCA) or AAPC COC and CIC dual certifications, or RHIT is required.
- At least three years of experience in facility fee coding and medical terminology with extensive knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, HCPCs and DR coding is required.
- Meets established coding and abstracting quality and productivity standards.
- Experienced with various coding software.
- Requires a good understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology and disease processes.
- Excellent attention to details.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Abstracts data in compliance with national, regional, and local policies, and interprets and reviews medical record documentation to assign accurate ICD-10 diagnosis, CPT, HCPCs and/or DRG’s.
- Utilizes the Hospital’s management system to accurately account for demographics and services performed for all surgical cases according to standard procedure and coding guidelines.
- Utilizes individual hospital medical record systems and coordinates with staff providers to obtain clinical documents required for appropriate coding and billing for all hospital procedures.
- Provides education and support to clinical areas in regard to appropriate documentation and coding of services to achieve accurate billing. Maintains effective communication with providers in relation to coding issues.
- This position can be remote
The Hospital Coder is responsible for abstracting clinical information from a variety of medical records and assigning the appropriate ICD-10 and CPT, HCPC’s and/or DRG codes to patient records.
