Department Background:
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical and economic well-being.
Cornell Botanic Gardens is a living plant museum comprising over 3,700 acres of University land in three major areas: the Botanical Gardens, Arboretum, and Natural Areas. An administrative unit of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), Cornell Botanic Gardens manages and protects these areas to support teaching and research at Cornell University; to preserve habitats and rare/endangered plants; and for public use for learning and recreation.
Position Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Director of Natural Areas, assist in the oversight of all aspects of the site management, restoration, and protection of the 25-acre Mundy Wildflower Garden, Park Park prairie restoration, and gardens at Beebe Lake in support of Botanic Gardens’ mission. Assist in determining management needs, make recommendations, develop work plans and schedules, and coordinate and execute stewardship activities, habitat restorations, species and new gardens’ curation, and special projects. Coordinate programs for the control of invasive species. Monitor, evaluate, and maintain trails and report hazards. Provide technical expertise to the public through extension. Coordinate educational uses and participate in Botanic Gardens’ educational and interpretive programs, including mentoring students in the Learning by Leading Program’s Sustainable Landscapes Team. Collect and maintain natural resource information and prepare reports, as requested. Manage Botanic Gardens native plant seed collection and exchange program and native plant propagation program for Natural Areas. Provide coordination, mentorship, and oversight for student interns and student workers, as well as seasonal employees as needed. Develop and maintain a robust volunteer program.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
- Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
- B.S. in ecology, natural resources, conservation or closely related plant science is required, plus 5-7 years of experience in a public garden or similar organization.
- Valid NYS pesticide applicator's license is required; or must be obtained within 2 years.
- Must have and maintain valid NYS drivers license and be cleared to drive for university business.
- Must be able to demonstrate effective leadership skills and judgment in decision making and task prioritization.
- Must be able to work in a team environment as well as independently to accomplish required tasks and achieve departmental objectives.
- Must be personable and flexible, possess excellent organizational and communication skills and take pride in work.
- Good mentoring, writing, and public speaking abilities are essential.
- Must be able to develop effective working relationships with a variety of people.
- Must be aware of natural areas and native plant concerns, conservation methods and protocols, and be cognizant of Natural Areas preservation issues.
- Must know nomenclature and be able to identify a wide range of native and naturalized herbaceous and woody plants.
- Must know natural ecological communities and native plants associated with community types.
- Must know invasive plant species issues, be able to identify best treatments for control based on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, and to prioritize and coordinate control efforts.
- Must be willing to work with pesticides and chemicals.
- Must have experience in the safe operation and use of equipment such as front deck mower, flail and hand mower, string trimmer, and UTVs.
- Basic computer skills including email, word processing, spreadsheet, and PowerPoint are required.
- Must be physically capable of performing the functions associated with this position. Must be willing to work under varying climatic conditions (heat, cold, precipitation, etc.).
- Requires physical fitness and the ability move heavy objects (more than 50lbs). May be required to report to work outside of the regularly-scheduled shift to address Botanic Gardens’ time-sensitive operational needs, watering needs, or to assist with departmental emergencies, or to deal with issues of public safety.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Extensive knowledge of plant nomenclature and ability to identify most native herbaceous and woody plants known from central New York State.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the natural ecological communities of the region and native plants associated with the community types.
- Broad knowledge of weedy and/or invasive plant species, and which species present the greatest threats to natural communities. Ability to identify the best treatments for removal, and to prioritize and execute removals.
- Broad knowledge of native seed collection, seed treatments, plant propagation, care requirements specific to each plant species, and habitat restoration.
- Experience developing and delivering formal and/or informal educational programming. Excellent mentoring, writing and public speaking skills.
- Curatorial and garden design experience.
- Familiarity with database data entry and report development.
