The Department of Literatures in English, Cornell University, invites applications for a senior lecturer (5 year appointment) to teach First-Year Writing Seminars and other undergraduate courses in modern literature and poetry, beginning in academic year 2023-24. Renewal will be based on performance and the needs of the department.

As part of the university-wide First-Year Writing Seminars program administered by the, the department offers a wide range of First-Year Writing Seminars in literature, film, and media; nature, the environment, and climate change; culture, politics, and identity; and in community engagement. In addition to FWS courses, the senior lecturer would teach some/all of the following courses in modern literature and poetry and/or develop new courses on similar topics: ENGL 2020 Literatures in English II: 1750 to the Present; ENGL 2070 Introduction to Modern Poetry; ENGL 2505 Modern Global Poetry; ENGL 2707 Let Me Count the Ways: Poetry and Mathematics; ENGL 2785 Comic Books and Graphic Novels; ENGL 3515 Ireland's World Stages: Drama and Mobility; ENGL 3545 British Literature after 1945. The successful candidate will teach a full-time course load of 3 courses per semester. During some semesters, the senior lecturer may serve as course leader-supervising writing courses taught by graduate student instructors and temporary lecturers-as the equivalent of one course.

Required qualifications are a PhD in English language and literature or similar literary field and experience teaching writing and modern literature and poetry at the undergraduate level. Candidates should have experience developing syllabi and teaching as the instructor of record on these topics. Preferred qualifications are experience teaching for the First-Year Writing Seminars program at Cornell University, expertise in comic books and graphic novels, and/or expertise in modern Irish literature.

This is a full-time, benefits eligible position beginning July 1, 2023. Visa sponsorship and relocation support are not available for this position. Senior lecturers must teach in person on Cornell's Ithaca campus.
