Who We Are:

The Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based ScienceS and Education (CLASSE) studies particle beams and accelerators, photon science, particle physics and the early universe, and serves students, the public and scientists from Cornell and around the world. The research missions of this laboratory are in many respects unique in the world.


The Machinists are part of the professional machining and fabrication team at CLASSE. This team of 5-7 machinists are responsible for the fabrication and development of parts and assemblies supporting all CLASSE research programs. The machinists interact regularly and closely with technical staff, students, researchers, faculty, and staff scientists to create often unique, one-of-a-kind and creative solutions to technical research matters.


What You Will Do:

As a member of the CLASSE machine shop team:
* Fabricate precision components and repair parts for sophisticated research equipment and systems.
* Work with a wide variety of materials, tools, and specialized equipment.
* Assist researchers with designing complex, unique components/systems and assessing material options.
* Program and operate computer numerically-controlled (CNC) equipment.
* Design and construct machine tool setups, assembly systems and tooling for special projects.
* Instruct others in new techniques, equipment use, and in own areas of expertise.

Required Qualifications

  • Trade/Vocational/Technical School and 4 to 6 years relevant machining/machine shop experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience safely, efficiently, and effectively operating a wide range of professional machine tools and shop equipment.
  • Demonstrated attention to fine details, ability to read engineering drawings and follow critical procedures and instructions.
  • Basic computer proficiency, skills and aptitude.
  • Capable of adapting to the changing needs of a research environment.
  • Able to receive directions and to communicate effectively in the shop and across all research groups.
  • Work effectively and cooperatively within a collaborative team environment.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional/accredited machinist or tool maker certifications or credentials.
  • Experience in an R&D/academic shop or facility.

While Cornell University's salary range for this title is $30.20 to $35.09, CLASSE anticipates hiring within the salary range of $33.00 to $34.27 .
