This position supports service and research activities within the USDA/ARS Plant Genetic Resources Unit (PGRU) in conservation and utilization of genetic resources of selected clonally propagated crops and vegetables. As a component of the National Plant Germplasm System, PGRU is responsible for germplasm acquisition, maintenance, characterization, and distribution. Research focuses on assessment of genetic diversity and alternative preservation technologies. Assist with pesticide, herbicide and fertilizer applications, pruning, land preparation, planting, cultivation, harvesting, general equipment maintenance, irrigation, discing, plowing, mowing, trellis maintenance and construction, greenhouse maintenance, potting and watering, propagation of fruit and vegetable germplasm using various methods, nursery production, stool bed harvest, collection, distribution and characterization of germplasm, lab and field experiments with alternative preservation techniques. Attend educational seminars and training meetings. Maintain all required qualifications to fulfill job. Work may involve periodic weekend duties. This is a term position with possibility of renewal based on funding. Required Qualifications: Formal training beyond a High School diploma of one to two years, two years college course work, or Associates Degree or equivalent; more than two years experience in field operations. Working knowledge of horticultural crops and basic computer programs such as Microsoft Excel and Word. Must possess or be willing to obtain a New York State (NYS) Commercial Pesticide License, category 1A within six months of employment. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to wear proper protective equipment to avoid exposure to toxic chemicals, using extreme caution when handling and applying. Must be able to adapt to changing priorities, situations and demands. Work in all kinds of unfavorable weather conditions. Sound judgment, excellent reasoning and decision-making skills, meticulous record keeping and ability to work with a diverse personalities. Must be able to work under pressure with a great deal of initiative. Proceed alone on regular tasks, consulting with supervisor on questionable situations. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects. Ability to work well with other is required while creating high-quality and respectful work environment. Must be able to work independently while supporting the efforts of an overall team. Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy with a wide range of internal and external clients. Must have demonstrated ability to handle sensitive / confidential material in a professional manner. Preferred Qualifications: Associates in Applied Sciences in agriculture with at least one year of experience working with field crops or 3 years of related field experience. Proven successful experience in planning, record keeping, and organization, able to make decisions with little direction from supervisor.
