HEAD CUSTODIAN
(OPERATIONS)
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High School diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent certificate
- Two years prior experience as a custodian shift leader or as a custodial supervisor
- Must be able to attend and complete various on-the-job training sessions.
- Must be able to pass written and demonstration tests on proper use and mixing of cleaning chemicals, cleaning procedures, carpet care and hard surface floor care.
- Must be available after working hours (on-call) as a part of the emergency and disaster team.
- Must be available for scheduled shift work.
- When assigned, must be able to operate school board vehicles in accordance with operational procedures and School Board
Policy 505
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Ability to fulfill all work requirements outlined in the Volusia County Schools Custodial Personnel Handbook, the custodial personnel specific job requirements, and the appropriate position description supplement requirements.
- Ability to read, comprehend and use written instructions, directions regarding precautions, chemicals, maintenance and recommended use of job-related equipment and tools or products.
- Ability to manage a diverse staff of custodians, measure individual performance, evaluate the overall cleanliness of the facility based on district guidelines, and provide feedback to the facility administrator.
- Ability to work alone or as part of a team.
- Ability to work productively with little or no supervision.
- Ability to participate in all types of emergency/disaster clean-up.
- Ability to complete tedious tasks.
- Ability to use and maintain all types of specialty equipment, tools, and chemicals.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

- General knowledge of computers
- General knowledge in the training of new employees, including hands on and documentation.
- Knowledge of the use and minor maintenance of lawn equipment

- Knowledge of chemicals (mixtures and uses) and cleaning procedures.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. *Assure the safety of children comes first.
2. *Perform all cleaning and sanitizing in accordance with Custodial Services Handbook and District requirements.
3. *Use custodial chemicals and supplies in accordance with Custodial Services Handbook and manufacturer’s instructions.
4. *Operate and maintain custodial equipment in accordance with Custodial Services Handbook and manufacturer’s instructions.
5. *Maintain proper care and disposal of all trash and recyclables and adhere to energy and recycling program requirements.
6. *Perform general cleaning and sanitizing of facilities to include, but not limited to floors, carpets, classrooms, offices, cafeteria, gymnasium, shower and locker rooms, auditorium, toilet rooms, drinking fountains, and all related areas as well as cleaning up after accidents and/or illnesses in accordance with District procedures and general grounds maintenance.
7. *Unlock and secure facilities.
8. *Restock and maintain supplies in all restrooms.
9. *Replace lightbulbs, as needed. This will require use of ladders.
10. *Maintain the cleanliness of air conditioner filters, return air grilles, and vents.
11. *Perform minor repairs and touch up painting.
12. *Move and assemble furniture and equipment.
13. *Pressure washing of campus to include sidewalks and exterior of buildings.
14. *Abide by all security procedures.
15. *Represent Volusia County School Board (VCSB) and the Department with a positive and professional service-oriented demeanor.
16. *Wear provided designated departmental uniform.
17. *Work as part of a team by establishing and maintaining working relationships that foster efficiency, productivity, quality results, and promotes cooperation with administrators, fellow employees, students, faculty, and the public.
18. *Communicate verbally and in writing as assigned.
19. *Clean up body fluids, for example, vomit, blood, feces, urine, according to prescribed procedures.
20. *Work flexible shifts as required.
21. *Attend and/ or conduct cross-training sessions with others in the Division and apply skills/ knowledge obtained.
22. *Understand and comply with oral and written directions or instructions.
23. *Read, comprehend, comply with, and use written instructions or directions regarding precautions and recommended use of chemicals, equipment, or products.
24. *Abide by and monitor safety rules/standards when using tools and equipment, which includes wearing required safety equipment and compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) requirements.
25. *Handle, store, and use fuel and oil products according to safe practices and procedures.
26. *Abide by the procedures included in the Volusia County Schools Custodial Personnel Handbook.
27. *Supervise the work of other custodians on shift, including training, as necessary.
28. *Work with the administration to plan the work of the custodial staff.
29. *Use a computer to complete work requests and other needed forms.
30. *Complete weekly and monthly facility inspection reports.
31. *Complete order and inventory forms.
32. *Verify time sheets.
33. *Report any damage/dangerous or hazardous situations related to work orders, equipment, or vehicles to supervisor.
34. *Serve as first responder to calls during off hours by Volusia County Schools’ Security Department as designated.
35. *Respond during times of disaster/ emergency, as the need arises, including evenings and weekends.
36. *Perform effectively in emergency situations.
37. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Designated Principal/Building Administrator.
