The County of San Diego is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of:
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST
 
Information Technology Specialists perform a variety of technical support duties pertaining to computer systems and related equipment and may serve as a first responder for computer, network, and hardware/software issues. Information Technology Specialists may serve as the technical representative and liaison between departments and the information technology (IT) service provider to provide effective technical support for network services and IT business processes. The IT Specialist will offer technical support to staff and diagnose errors, install, and update computer hardware/ software; analyze and resolve system/application-related support requests, including specialties such as Help Desk, Web, and ERP.
 
The current opening for this position will be responsible for the development of public safety subscriber radio programming files (codeplugs) utilizing manufacturer-specific software.  Attention to detail is paramount in completing these tasks.  Other duties could include but not be limited to: ID Management, Database Management, Field Programming, Historical Data Reporting, etc.).  All work will be completed under the direction of a Telecommunication Technician III.

The list established from this recruitment may be used for vacancies in various County of San Diego departments. IT Specialists may be utilized in different ways depending on the department in which they are placed. You will learn more if you are invited to interview.
 
 INTERVIEWS AND HIRING PROCESS:
 The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below.
  • Job Offer and Background Process begins after the interviews. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.
  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

IDEAL CANDIDATE:
The ideal candidate for IT Specialist must have working knowledge of relevant operating systems and technological products/ services with a vision for using those tools to improve the overall user experience and customer service. An effective IT Specialist will possess problem-solving and critical thinking skills, along with a desire to implement new processes and recommend enhancements to current systems, and the ability to identify troubleshoot, and resolve system and application issues. The ideal candidate for the IT Specialist position will have good organization, time management, and prioritization skills to work on a wide array of competing projects.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS:          
You will be exposed to computer screens in an office environment. Depending on the Department you are placed with, this position may require on-call support of systems for the County's 24/7 computing environment. You may be working on-site at animal shelters located in Bonita and Carlsbad. Possible exposure to excessive noise (barking dogs), animal waste and dead animals, dust, chemicals from cleaning agents/disinfectants, sewage, and zoonotic diseases.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 1.  An associate's degree from an accredited college or university, or certified foreign equivalency in computer science, information technology or a closely related field which provided a basic understanding of information technology concepts; AND, 
 
 2. Two (2) years of information technology work experience performing duties such as providing hardware and software training; identifying and resolving hardware and software problems; writing queries; participating in the validation of system data, interfaces, and functionality; and/or implementing a variety of applications;
 
 OR,
 
 3. Four (4) years of IT program related experience with the County of San Diego.
 
Note: Additional years of directly related, verifiable experience or IT coursework may be substituted for the education/experience requirements on a year for year basis.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:
As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Current County employees may be excluded from this process.
 
 EVALUATION:
The names of qualified candidates will be placed on a six (6) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in the employment application and supplemental questionnaire.
