ABOUT THE POSITION
 
Enjoy three-day weekends. This position will work 40 hours a week, Monday through Thursday until 900 hours are reached. Extra help positions are hourly employees that may work up to 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Benefits are not included.
 
Requires possession of a California Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain one within one (1) year from date of hire.
 
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
 
Under general supervision, to perform journey?level work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and overhaul of gasoline, electric, and diesel-powered heavy-duty trucks, and equipment; and to perform related work as required.
Diagnoses and locates mechanical defects in a wide variety of equipment, including gasoline, electric, and diesel powered trucks, tractors, and heavy equipment; makes major and minor mechanical repairs; disassembles, repairs or replaces worn parts; removes and installs water and fuel pumps, carburetors and fuel injectors, governors, starting motors, clutches, transmissions, differentials, brakes and steering gear; repairs heavy equipment, checking and replacing rollers, pins and bushings; replaces electrical wiring; may use welding equipment to fabricate, rebuild and strengthen various parts and pieces of equipment; may be required to assist in road maintenance activities; and maintains records of time and materials used on each job.
Any combination of education and experience sufficient to directly demonstrate possession and application of the following:
 
Knowledge of: 
Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in this work environment; operating principles of electric motors and engines fueled by gasoline, diesel, or gaseous fuels; methods, materials, paint, tools, and techniques used in repair, maintenance, welding, and fabrication of heaving and light equipment and mechanical repair work on a variety of equipment; and the use and care of tools used in said work.
 
Ability to:
Communicate effectively with those contacted in the course of work; follow written and oral instructions; adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; repair tires; interpret and work from sketches, schematic drawings, and other diagrams; perform with skill and independence in troubleshooting, inspecting, and repairing damage and defects in heavy and light equipment; opacity test equipment; and operate drill presses, hydraulic presses, chop saws, bench grinders, gas and arc welding equipment, and laptop or scan tools.
 
These employment standards are typically attained with one (1) year of journey?level experience in the repair and maintenance of a wide variety of trucks and heavy equipment, including diesel powered and track laying equipment.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
 
  • Possession of a California Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or ability to obtain one within one (1) year from date of hire.
  • Must possess own tools.
 
MINIMUM TOOL REQUIREMENTS
 
  • One set 1/4 drive sockets, ratchets, and extensions.
  • One set 3/8 drive sockets, 1/4 to 7/8 standard and deep sets.         
  • One 3/8 drive ratchet and extensions. Extensions should be 3 in., 6 in. and 12 in.
  • One 5/8 and one 13/16 sparkplug socket.
  • One set 1/2 drive sockets, 7/16 in. to 1 1/4 in. stand and deep.
  • One 1/2 drive ratchet, breaker bar and extensions 2 in., 5 in., and 12 in.
  • Two sets of combination wrenches 1/4 in to 1 1/4 in or any combination of open or box end wrenches.
  • One set standard tip screwdrivers.
  • One set Phillips tip screwdrivers.
  • One set torx bit screwdrivers or torx bit set.
  • One pair of slip joint pliers (Channel lock).
  • One pair of diagonal cutting pliers.
  • One pair of needle nose pliers.
  • One pair of wire crimping and stripping pliers.
  • Two ball peen hammers, various sizes.
  • One set of punches.
  • One set of chisels.
  • One set of prybars.
  • One set of spark plug feeler gauges.
  • One set of feeler gauges.
  • One flashlight.
  • One tape measure.
  • One inspection mirror.
  • One electrical test light.
  • One set of Allen wrenches, standard, and metric.
  • One set brake tools.
  • One set metric wrenches, 8 to 19mm.
  • One set metric sockets, 8 to 19mm.
  • One set of ½ in metric and standard impact sockets.
  • One impact universal or a set of impact universal sockets.
  • One ½ in. impact air wrench.
  • One creeper.
  • One tire gauge.
  • One tire valve core tool.
  • One air cut off tool or die grinder.
  • Toolboxes as needed.  They should be of the locking type for security reasons.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and risk of electrical shock.
 
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
