Summary:
Covaris is seeking an experienced Field Applications Scientist (FAS) for Central & Mountain West to provide technical expertise and customer education/training for our Genomics, Sample Preparation, & Proteomics workflow solutions. The individual will also assist in managing Covaris technical resources and scientific collaborations, including protocols, application notes, and other publications. This position is a member of the Solutions Group reporting to the Manager, Field Applications-North America. It will also require working closely with Covaris Sales, Marketing, R&D, and directly with customers. This position is ideal for a self-motivated individual with broad scientific knowledge and the drive to create top-quality support processes and culture.
Location: The ideal candidate will be located in Colorado, Illinois, or Ohio. The Key Coverage area primarily includes Central & Mountain West install base. Access to public transport, the airport, and proximity to major Research/ biotech hubs is essential.
Essential Responsibilities: The employee may be required to perform all, or a combination of the following essential responsibilities as determined by business necessity.
- Provide post-sales on-site customer training in the form of classroom and/or hands-on laboratory sessions, lectures, and consultation regarding sample preparation/ analysis recommendations. Execute remote customer and distributor training as needed.
- Organize and execute demonstrations of Covaris applications and products; manage these projects independently to ensure all demonstration equipment is fully functional and optimized.
- Partner with the Sales team to serve as the scientific/technical expert, helping drive sales and providing support for new and existing customers. Lead pre-sales technical presentations.
- Act as the voice of the customer (pre- and post-purchase) and provide product feedback to departments such as R&D and Marketing. Collect VOC in the field and categorize it in the Solutions Database.
- Support trade shows, conferences, and technical symposia by presenting posters/talks.
- Be the lead technical writer. Define, organize, and write protocols for internal and external use to train sales, marketing, and customers.
- Work closely with Solutions teams, assist in assessing new applications for the Company’s AFA technology, and provide technical expertise and insight into customer needs.

Requirements/Qualifications:
- Preferred Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or a relevant field with at least 1-2 years of Field Applications Scientist industry experience supporting on-site customers.
- Bachelor’s Degree with 3 years of Field Applications Scientist industry experience and at least five years of lab experience in a corporate or academic setting in the relevant area.
- Availability to travel up to 70% of working time in the field.
- Knowledge of Next Generation Sequencing, RNA & DNA sample preparation is required. Proteomics experience is a plus.
- Experienced with common DNA sequence analysis tools and workflows such as sequence alignment, genome visualization, and comparative genomics.
- Expertise in technical writing; fully fluent in English.
- Direct lab experience in biomolecule extraction, such as nucleic acids and proteins from flash-frozen tissues, FFPE, and cells, is highly desired.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; confident presenter.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues.
- Ability to operate as an independent contributor and a cooperative team member.
- Competency in using Microsoft Office 365.
- Experience with CRM systems (e.g., Salesforce).
- Must be detail-oriented and highly motivated.
- Critical thinking skills, highly organized with the ability to prioritize tasks and timelines.
- Capacity to maintain composure in stressful situations.
