• 40 and 32.5 hour work weeks, June through Aug
• Teach outdoor and survival skills - shelter, knots, knives, fire, navigation, foraging, cordage, fishing, hunting, archery etc.
• Work in team of 2 co-instructors with up to 14 youth in public parks
• Travel to and work in new locations weekly for one week day camp programs
• Able to live 'on the road' easily/comfortably
• Work autonomously and interact with parents and public traffic at site locations
• Manage safety and behaviour during programming with groups of 6-9 years old or 9-14 years old
• Must love working with youth. Experience preferred but not required. Outdoor skills background preferred but need not be 'expert'
• Gas/lodging not included with some exceptions for long travel

Summer in Washington, Colorado and Maryland. We are looking for instructors who are passionate and curious and love working with youth.

We are looking for lead and assistant instructors for the Summer of 2022 who can work specifically in Spokane and Pullman, WA or in Grand Junction, Durango and Boulder, CO. Instructors travel within or between (depending on fit, we work this out with the particular availability of strong candidates) the states of Oregon, Washington OR Colorado (does not require travel between states) to lead our week long programs. Couples are welcome to apply. Candidates should be excited to travel and able to comfortably manage an itinerant lifestyle or be local to the cities we serve. Lodging/gas is not included in compensation excepting assignments that require several hours travel. Instructors have, in the past, camped, lived out of their vehicle, stayed with friends and family where possible and traveled/taught as couples.

Our busiest time is the Summer Season when regional and travelling instructors and instructor teams teach week long day camps in municipal or state parks in partnership with various Parks and Recreation departments in various cities and states. Additionally, we run teen and pre teen backpacking trips in the Summer. In Fall/Winter/Spring we provide programming for Oregon School Districts along with longer term adult and youth courses and programs in our home base city of Corvallis.

We are looking for amazing people who love kids and the outdoors to make our camps and courses a transformational experience for the people we serve. We want people who are both competent and also want to use our programs to make a difference in the world. Our goal is to provide youth with an experience of taking "mentored" risks and developing a meaningful connection to the natural world and each other. We want our students to experience discovery, connect with the natural world and develop initiative, accountability and creativity.

Summer positions typically run for 10 weeks beginning with a week long training. Our training occurs the second week of June and instructors hired after this may be incorporated with an adapted training regimen. Summer Camps and trips begin in
June and run through the fourth week in August working with children between 6-14 years old teaching scenarios in shelter, survival, tool use, fire, navigation, tracking, traps, cordage, knots, awareness, games etc. Instructors work in teams of two and, aside from instruction, are responsible for risk and behaviour management, working with parents and guardians at pick up and drop off and interacting with the public. All instructors are background checked.

Skills needed include:

• Ability to work effectively and dynamically with young people
• Deliver outdoor skill content curriculum confidently
• Maintain and administer an organized camp
• Manage participant groups and effectively communicate with the public and families
• Flexible and adventurous demeanor. Able to travel easily and adapt to working in new places

A typical week is working from 8:30-4:30 in a municipal or county park setting, monday - friday delivering curriculum with one co-instructor and up to 15 youth. This work may extend into the off season for the right person. $19/hour and up DOE. Must be certified in 1st Aid/CPR by June and people interested in being expedition guides should have a current WFA or equivalent. For Covid 19 we follow State Guidelines for outdoor programming. Currently we are not required to wear masks but state guidelines require that instructors are vaccinated.
