The Design Manager reports directly to the President.

 

Job Description

 The Manager, Design is an integral part of the management team, they are directly responsible for the planning and designing of all projects in the department.  The Manager, Design leads the development of the department including; performance management, hiring, recruiting, and ensuring training necessary for projects completed.   The Design Manager coordinates and directs projects, team members and sets goals, budgets and timelines for active projects.  This role is to be in communication routinely with all Designers, Project Managers, and the Production Team, all in furtherance of the company’s objectives.

 

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and direct projects, making detailed plans to meet minimum production targets and directing the integration of technical activities.
  • Analyze technology, resource needs, and market demand, to plan and assess the feasibility of projects.
  • Direct, review, and approve product design and changes.
  • Develop and update department processes using ISO standards
  • Analyze failures to understand root causes and update processes to address shortfalls.
  • Recruit employees; assign, direct, and evaluate their work; and oversee the development and maintenance of staff competence.
  • Perform administrative functions such as reviewing and writing reports, approving expenditures, enforcing rules, and making decisions about the purchase of materials or services.
  • Review and recommend or approve contracts and cost estimates.
  • Present and explain proposals, reports, and findings to clients.
  • Plan, direct, and coordinate survey work with other staff activities, and certifying survey work.
  • To direct and coordinate the development of long and short range programs based on sound engineering and economic principles, to ensure assignments and projects are completed safely and efficiently.
  • Establish a construction schedule consistent with available engineering and construction work-hour resources.
  • Direct the coordination of special projects for the Engineering Department.
  • Prepares and updates project engineering procedures including description of the project administration process and contract documentation guidelines.
  • Ensures projects are implemented in accordance with Greco Aluminum Railings Ltd. purchasing, Request for Proposal (RFP) and contracting procedures.
  • Provides technical oversight and coordination of project engineering work; through project coordination meetings and other means.
  • Monitors progress against project schedules and budgets; recommends allocation of resources as required to accomplish goals.
  • Authorizes or recommends change orders and claims resolution; represents Greco Aluminum Railings Ltd. in construction contract dispute resolution meetings.
  • Prepares the annual budget request for the program; estimates staffing, equipment supply needs based upon recent trends and planned activities.
  • Monitors expenditures after budget adoption.
  • Interviews and hires new staff; prioritizes, assigns and reviews work, approves time off for payroll purposes, and prepares and reviews employee performance evaluations.
  • Communicating with Supervisors, Peers, or Subordinates; Providing information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.
  • Making Decisions and Solving Problems - Analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.
  • Supervise and generate design/planning and execution of design projects
  • Supervise and generate calculations/estimating, take-offs, cut-list and bill of material (BOM)
  • Supervise and generate detailing, drawing and approval of layouts/details
  • Establish goals and review performance metrics to track accuracy and thoroughness of work.
  • Work with other Division Management to establish strategic plans, objectives, and priorities.
  • Promote a culture of safety, teamwork, professionality and accountability 

 

 

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

 

  • Engineering or Architectural Degree
  • 8 years’ experience in a Design Department with direct responsibility for the design and/or construction portion of the department
  • 5 years in a supervisory role, managing professionals.
  • Project Management Knowledge
  • Demonstrated understanding of engineering theories and principles, Canadian Engineering Standards
  • Knowledge of Solidworks and AutoCAD
  • Excellent Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint skills
  • Ability to multitask and have excellent organization skills
  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills
  • Able to apply the right mathematical methods and formulas to problem solving
  • Able to create alternative solutions to problems
  • Experience optimizing systems for cost, schedule, reliability, and/or maintainability.
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Results oriented, adaptable and positive disposition.
  • Excellent time management and project management skills
  • High level of sound and independent judgment and reasoning
