Job Description Summary
This is a revenue-funded position. Position continuance based on continued funding. Additionally, this position requires availability to cover lifeguard shifts, potentially early morning and evening.

DEFINITION
Under the general supervision of the Director, Workforce, Economic Development and Community Programs and/or the Supervisor of Community Programs, plans, organizes, and oversees a variety of activities related to the Community Recreation instructional and recreational swimming programs, and perform other related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The position of Aquatics Lead is distinguished by the requirement to plan, develop, organize, and implement aquatics and other recreation activities and services, including, but not limited to, lifeguard services, swim lessons, aqua fitness, lap swim, recreational swim and water polo.

This position supports student learning outcomes and institutional effectiveness by providing instruction, assistance and safety to children and adults in pool activities, such as fitness, swimming and recreation.

Essential Functions & Qualifications
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Recruits, interviews and recommends selection of lifeguards, swim instructors, aqua-fitness instructors, program aides, and other recreation staff; oversee the training and evaluation of this staff;
Monitor compliance of industry and American Red Cross standards; enforce and explain rules and regulations; and ensure safety precautions are observed;
Ensure certification documentation and review;
Assist in developing the schedule of aquatics and recreation classes and activities, monitor, review and revise as needed;
Oversee on-deck pool operations, including emergencies and incidents reports, drop-in registrations and payments, patron and staff issues, and outside user needs;
Assist with the monitoring aquatics budgets, aquatics staff timecards and payroll processes;
Train and recertify lifeguards and arrange for WSI certification;
Assist with the scheduling, development, and presentation of staff in-service trainings;
Complete program and activity assessment and assist in the completion of the Institutional Program Planning and Review process;
Maintain and update and aquatics manual and assist in maintaining and updating lifeguard, swim and aqua-fitness instructor job descriptions;
Communicate with campus departments, especially with Facilities and Athletics/PE regarding pool activities and pool-related issues;
Serve as liaison to community entities for pool use and activities;
Act as a customer service representative between the department and patrons;
Provide lifeguard services and maintain order in the pool;
Rescue persons in distress;
Serve as liaison to the American Red Cross keeping up to date with regulations, policies, and procedures;
Teach swimming at various aquatics proficiency levels;
Complete required paperwork as assigned;
Facilitate positive teamwork within staff;
Perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
Required
American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, including CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid (may obtain within the first 6 months);
Title 22 certificate (may obtain within the first 6 months);
Lifeguard Management Certificate (may obtain within the first 6 months)

Desired:
American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor;
Community First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor;
American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or equivalent
Aquatic Facility Operator and/or Certified Facility Operator
Experience in aquatic management;
Supervisory experience;
College level course work in recreation or related field.

Knowledge of:
Pool operations;
Swimming and teaching six basic strokes;
Knowledge of principles relating to aquatic activities;

Ability to:
Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;
Promote positive relationships in the community;
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties;
Maintain confidentiality;
Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and of staff and students with physical and learning disabilities;

Physical ability to:
Withstand exposure to sun and chlorinated water for up to 8 hours per day
Lift victim from water with assistance and lift aquatics equipment and supplies with or without assistance (approximately 30-200 lbs.)
Assist with pool covers
Lift and move up to 50 lbs.

License and Certificates (current within the last year) :
Required
Valid driver's license and eligible to obtain California driver's license upon hire.

SALARY SCHEDULE
Below is the full salary schedule range for this position, steps A through E. Per our bargaining agreement, we can only place new employees at Steps A through C, which is the anticipated hiring range also listed below. Salary Schedule Range: $3,521 - $4,280 per month.
Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,521 - $3,882 per month.
