The Clinical Education Manager is responsible for working collaboratively across the organization with leadership and staff to ensure overall orientation, education and training for staff development and patient care delivery both in the classroom and at the bedside.  This individual displays competence in Adult Learning Principles and the 5 core health care competencies of interdisciplinary team work, quality improvement, evidence-based practice, patient-focused care and informatics.  They are a clinical and professional role model and demonstrates commitment to lifelong learning.  Responsibilities include educational program planning and delivery, compliance with regulatory standards, setting and maintaining standards of nursing care and practice, coordinating services, coaching for development and providing for professional growth of staff across multiple departments to meet needs of the organization.  The Clinical Education Manager works hours as needed to meet the needs of staff and organization to include consistent, visible presence on off shifts, weekends and holidays

Responsibilities

Interdisciplinary Teamwork/Communication:

  • Supports hospital’s and department’s recruitment/retention plan in collaboration with staff and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Facilitates interdisciplinary learning and collaboration using team processes for leading change and decision-making.
  • Creates an environment which recognizes and values interdisciplinary roles around a patient/family centered model.
  • Communicates effectively (written and verbal). Provides information in a clear, transparent way driving continual feedback.
  • Builds interdisciplinary relationships focused on collaboration, conflict resolution and patient focused care.
  • Develops credibility and effective relationships within the healthcare system.

Communication and Relationship Building:

  • Delivers oral presentation to diverse audiences on nursing, healthcare, and/or organizational issues.
  • Utilizes active listening skills and is responsive to concerns.
  • Asserts views using non-threatening, non-judgmental methods.
  • Confirms positive behaviors and confronts/manages negative behaviors of staff, physicians, peers, and other hospital employees.
  • Represents the organization to constituents in the community in a positive manner.
  • Supports CVPH in collaboration with affiliated professional schools.
  • Assists in identifying education and orientation needs of existing and potential staff.
  • Designs, implements, and evaluates education programs using various teaching/learning methodologies.
  • Creates opportunities for employees to be involved in decision-making.
  • Establishes ongoing coaching relationship with staff.
  • Provides clinical coaching and career counseling to staff and aspiring leaders.
  • In partnership with the Clinical Learning and Development Manager and Education Development specialists, participates in clinical onboarding, orientation, generic competency development/implementation and life safety programming.

Informatics/Business Skills:

  • Participates in the education of the patient care team members on financial implications of patient care decisions.
  • Demonstrates advanced competence/skill with technology/notes of communication (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint presentation software, internet search engines and technology based communication programs).
  • Uses telecommunication devices as per CVPH guidelines.
  • Participates in the evaluation and education of information systems in the practice setting.
  • Assists in the completion of staff performance evaluations in the timeframe as outlined by CVPH’s policies.

Leadership/Professional Practice Skills/Evidence Based Practice:

  • Demonstrates and promotes ongoing professional development and lifelong learning in self and staff.
  • Participates in the development and communication of consistent strategic plan.
  • Assists the director in the application of methods to hold staff accountable (i.e. standards, strategic plan).
  • Demonstrates accountability for job performance and supports the Mission, Vision, and Values of the organization.
  • Supports the model of collaborative professional practice, (e.g., builds a network of practice colleagues and resources).
  • Assists in the process for developing, implementing, and evaluating standards of care and standards of practice based on the patient population, relevant professional standards, and evidence based practice/research.
  • Ensures that care providers practice in roles as allowed by NYS Practice Act, the ANA Code of Ethics, Joint Commission, other regulatory agencies, and applicable governing laws.
  • Assists in the organizational plan to ensure staff orientation, competence, and professional development. Ensures accurate recordkeeping is maintained.
  • Assists in providing clear and consistent performance feedback to staff.
  • Provides educational program planning; implementation, evaluation to individuals and teams and in a variety of formats. (lecture, bedside, simulation)

Quality and Patient-Focused Care:

  • Promotes successful performance improvement initiatives.
  • Utilizes research finding for the establishment of standards, practices and patient care models in the organization.
  • Supports the organization-wide patient safety program.
  • Supports patient safety, responding and acting on safety recommendations.
  • Articulates the organizational and departmental/unit quality improvement goals and objectives.
  • Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of a performance improvement program which incorporates clinical data, service excellence, quality improvement and risk management.
  • Makes daily patient and staff rounds to access status of patient quality of care delivered.
  • Demonstrates service excellence at all times and always puts patient care needs first.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in nursing required. Masters in nursing preferred.
  • Registered Professional Nurse in the State of New York required.
  • Certification in specialty preferred or active involvement with completion within twelve (12) months.
  • Three (3) years’ experience in a relevant clinical setting required as determined by Associate Vice President or Vice President. Demonstrated leadership and management abilities with good oral/written communication skills, ability to facilitate change, lead teams and develop and implement education programs. Meets requirement of physical/preplacement screening.
  • Minimum of two (2) years relevant management, supervisory or educational experience and/or charge nurse experience required.
  • Applicable educational technology required.
