Title: SUBSTITUTE CUSTODIAN
Reports to: Maintenance Supervisor
Work Schedule: As Needed
Primary Job Function:
- The Delaware Area Career Center Substitute Custodian is responsible for performing custodial duties on a temporary, as needed basis to protect and preserve the school building, grounds, equipment, and furnishings of the district. A DACC substitute custodian is responsible for providing a safe, clean learning environment for students, staff, and the community. This job description is a comprehensive list of essential functions. Essential functions are job duties a staff member must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodations.
Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or its equivalent

Post-secondary training in a trade is preferred

Custodial and/or building maintenance experience preferred
General Maintenance:
- Responsible for monitoring building conditions during working hours
- Responsible for recognizing when problems may be developing and immediately reporting suspected problems and/or unsafe conditions. This includes but is not limited to:
- Unusual odors
- Noises
- Leaks
- Responsible for performing minor repairs that do not unduly disrupt the routine work schedule this includes avoiding disrupting building activities except during emergencies
- Responsible for anticipating needs and replenishing supplies to avoid work schedule disruptions
- Responsible for completing required daily checklists
- Responsible for performing groundskeeping duties. This includes but is not limited to:
- Maintaining and preparing equipment for storage
- Removal of snow and ice
- Removal of any debris along sidewalks and other public entrances
General Cleaning:
- Responsible for custodial duties related to cleaning. This includes but is not limited to:
- Regular removal of trash
- Washing, stripping and waxing floors
- Sanitizing bathrooms
- Re-supplying toilet paper, paper towels, soap
- Washing windows
- Responsible for cleaning, moving and arranging furnishings, supplies and equipment as directed
Safety & Security:
- Responsible for following approved safety procedures when cleaning up injuries involving chemicals, solvents, blood, bodily fluid and/or body tissue
- Responsible for participating in occupational safety and health training programs as directed
- Responsible for complying with safety regulations and environmental law
- Responsible for ensuring that all custodial supplies are appropriately labeled and stored safely
- Responsible for timely documentation of all injuries that require medical attention
- Responsible for inspecting safety equipment. This includes but is not limited to:
- Emergency lights
- Alarm systems
- Ground faults protectors
- Responsible for being prepared for all safety inspections
- Responsible for protecting the safety of all district equipment and property
- Responsible for responding to building emergencies as requested
- Responsible for taking appropriate action during adverse weather conditions
- Responsible for managing building security. This includes but is not limited to:
- Assisting rental groups as directed
- Directing visitors to the appropriate location
- Securing the building at the end of the day
- Responsible for taking precautions to ensure staff and students are safe and reporting concerns to appropriate administrator
Support Services:
- Responsible for checking daily to find out if there are school activities that require preparation and/or cleanup
- Responsible for helping with the receipt of deliveries. This can include:
- Unloading trucks
- Inspecting packages for damage
- Verifying quantities
- Organizing and storing deliveries
- Responsible for preparing and submitting reports, records and inventories as directed
- Responsible for picking up and delivering equipment, materials and other supplies as directed
- Responsible for helping respond to unexpected circumstances or pressing district needs as directed
Professional Responsibilities:

- Responsible for maintaining visibility in the community and promoting a professional image of the school district
- Responsible for developing a strategy to accomplish personal performance objectives within specified timelines
- Responsible for observing established school hours

Ensuring Student Safety:
- Employees shall be expected to exercise reasonable care with respect to the safety of students and student property. Employees shall discharge their duties and responsibilities to students and property according to the applicable Laws, State guidelines and Board policies.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of hand, power, and diagnostic tools and equipment required in the performance of the job
- Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, codes and guidelines pertaining to custodial/facility operations.
- Knowledge of all safety precautions applicable to trade.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local policies related to students
- Knowledge of FERPA, IDEA and HIPPA
- Knowledge of the application, use and proper storage of all chemicals used in performance of the job
- Knowledge of hazardous waste disposal
- Knowledge of general and fundamental principles of general repair and maintenance procedures in such areas as mechanical, electrical, steam, air system, carpentry and masonry or plumbing
- Knowledge of all DACC adopted software
- Knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation
- Skilled in collaboration and decision-making, seeking consensus whenever possible
- Skilled in conflict resolution
- Skilled at developing rapport and interacting effectively with students and staff
