Job Description
Title: Educational Interpreter/Sign Language Interpreter

Qualifications
- Must be a high school graduate.
- Valid Ohio’s Department of Education License Associate: Interpreter of Hearing Impaired.
- Must possess the training and skills required to perform tasks assigned.
- Must be fluent in American Sign Language.
- Must possess knowledge of child development and language development.
- Must submit to both Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification (BCII) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) background checks prior to final employment.
- Must have the ability to travel to more than one work location in the course of the work day if so assigned.
- Must possess demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others.
- Must pass criminal background checks and be free from communicable diseases.
General Description
This person, under the direction of a teacher or administrator, may communicate with students regarding their education, attend student activities, and help students, parents, and community members communicate with peers, teachers, and administrators.
Essential Functions
- To supervise under the direction of a teacher or administrator in classrooms, cafeterias, libraries, and/or resource rooms.
- To communicate with students and parents regarding the educational program including but not limited to attendance, grades/instruction, discipline, and family issues.
- Facilitate student’s communication in a variety of settings.
- Prepare and deliver effective interpretation that supports instruction, assessment, and the learning of each individual student.
- Participate in the Evaluation Team Report and Individual Education Program Process.
- Enhance student’s independence and self-confidence.
- Understand and assist in usage of assistive technology used by the student.
- Support student’s abilities, needs, services, and language as documented on the ETR and IEP.
- Collect information and chart progress on student use of interpreting services.
- Collaborate with educational staff.
- To perform other duties and tasks as assigned by the teacher/administrator.
- To participate in staff training and meetings.
- To ensure that confidentiality practices are maintained at all times.
- To assist student with self-help skills such as toileting and eating.
- To confer with supervisors regarding process, concerns, and recommendations.
- To maintain records and files as required.
- To plan and organize own work to meet priorities.
- To meet deadlines (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly).
- To report the presence of unauthorized or atypical visitors.
- To comply with state and federal regulations that pertains to the position (e.g. OSHA, OCR).
- Maintain licensure through activities approved by the Local Professional Development Committee in accordance with an Individual Professional Development Plan.
- Establish and maintain professional rapport with students.
- Report cases of suspected child abuse to administration and law enforcement authorities according to state law.
- To adhere to all board of education policies, regulations, and procedures.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Serves a role model for educators and students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and responsible, intelligent human beings.
- Shall perform other such duties as the Governing Board may assign/determine.
- The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the County/District.
- Observes Risk Reduction Safety Rules and Regulations of the Warren County ESC and School Districts, State, Federal OSHA laws and will be evaluated to the extent of compliance and implementation as an employee of such rules and regulations for safety in the workplace while visiting such sites in the line of duties.
