What are the responsibilities and job description for the Facility Manager position at Deer Mountain Day Camp?
Deer Mountain Day Camp, a venerable, 65 year old family owned children’s summer camp, is seeking a leader for its Facility Team.
We need a motivated, hard-working, skilled professional interested in joining our tight knit year-round team who will take ownership of our beautiful 25-acre facility as we continue to:
- renovate buildings
- assist with landscaping our grounds
- complete ongoing repairs and maintenance
- keep the facility safe and clean
…all in service of the overall camp mission and success of the business
Skills Neede:
- proficient in carpentry & plumbing
- ability to complete light electric
- experience with landscaping & painting
- proficiency in operation of construction equipment, including excavators, augers, tractors, backhoes, plows, zero turn mowers, etc.
- knowledge of how to maintain equipment
- Familiarity with wells, septic systems and pools a plus
Candidate must be highly organized, have managerial experience and enjoy multitasking/RE prioritizing tasks as needed. This is a hands-on position - candidate must be willing to participate in all aspects of the job, from new construction to janitorial responsibilities as needed.
Considerable overtime required in June, July and August, including some weekend work. $25-28/hour, full benefits package, including healthcare, simple pension plan and paid vacation.
Detailed Position Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):
Management
- Directly manage 2-3 staff members in a year-round capacity as well as a total of 4-5 during the summer season.
- Work with Owners & Directors to refine historical daily, weekly and annual task lists, as needed, to improve efficiency, incorporate new projects, add necessary repairs, etc.
- Schedule and/or oversee work of outside contractors.
- Allocate work accordingly to staff members both in and out of camp season.
- Train seasonal staff to implement camp season cleaning schedule.
- Advise Owners & Directors on (and/or assist with design of) functional upgrades & new activity facilities.
- Responsible for opening and closing camp on a daily basis.
Repairs & Maintenance
- Maintain approximately 30 buildings, including a year-round office, large buildings used for group gatherings as well as numerous 800-900 sq ft summer cabins used for activities and locker rooms.
- Proficiency in all aspects of carpentry and strong knowledge of plumbing needed to complete renovations and new construction projects.
- Knowledge of water wells and UV light systems to diagnose issues and call in outside contractor.
- Turn water on and off each year.
- Knowledge of septic systems to be able to diagnose and solve issues or call in outside contractor.
- Ability to use a tractor with bucket and backhoe, excavator, zero turn mower, weed whacker, back pack blower, power washer and other grounds and landscaping equipment.
- Basic knowledge of grounds maintenance including grass growing and lawn care, sports field maintenance, edging, etc.
- Complete fall leaf pick up.
- Maintain facility in immaculate condition at all times.
- Prepare facility for year-round sales.
Remodeling & Construction
- Must have ability to complete total interior renovations including bathrooms.
- Replace siding as needed.
- Repair or replace roofing.
- Build or rebuild porches and decks.
- Complete structural building updates based on engineering drawings.
- Knowledge of or ability to learn and follow local building codes.
- Ability to construct building additions and small structures from the ground up.
Seasonal Camp Set Up & Summer Operation Needs
- Turn On water, including 2 wells and city connection.
- Daily check of UV light function in each well.
- Put up large and small tents, awnings, nets, etc.
- Move picnic tables.
- Thoroughly clean and prep all buildings.
- Complete any necessary building or facility updates required for season.
- Train summer staff in cleaning procedures and daily schedule, weed whacking and other basic functions to keep facility impeccably clean, safe and operational throughout summer.
- Organize summer cleaning supplies and paper goods. Order as needed.
- Oversee pool opening & repairs.
- Maintain pools throughout summer – backwashing, track chlorine and propane supply, monitor chemical levels, complete basic repair and/or evaluation of pool equipment and coordinate with outside contractor.
- Organize outside contractors to check all kitchen equipment, including ice machine, warmers, convection ovens, walk in refrigerators, hood, etc.
Seasonal Camp Break Down
- Take down and complete yearly cleaning procedure on all tents and awnings.
- Remove and clean all sports padding, nets and windscreens and organize winter storage.
- Keep inventory of and record condition of above to be able to recommend replacement purchases in time for next season.
- Break down lake – clean and repair boats, life jackets and dock.
- Remove all summer supplies from cabins and organize storage.
- Oversee pool closings.
Required Skills:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 10 years of working experience in construction, general maintenance and/or landscaping.
- Strong carpentry, painting and trade skills.
- Basic landscaping experience a plus.
- Good communication and organizational skills.
- Previous experience managing a team.
- Strong work ethic and history of reliability demonstrated through references from former employers.
- Ability to lift or carry up to 75 pounds.
- Able to stand, walk, bend over and lift for extended period of time.
- Must have reliable transportation to and from work.

Pay: $24.00 - $28.00 per hour
