JOB DESCRIPTION: The job of Literacy Specialist is to improve students' success in Reading by implementing approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; supporting lesson plan development; modeling the necessary skills to perform assignments; providing a positive learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding students’ literacy progress, expectations, and goals, etc.
JOB DUTIES:
Assists teachers in implementing reading curriculum
Trains teachers in the use and management of reporting systems in the district curriculum mapping system
Collaborates with school personnel, parents, and various community agencies for the purpose of improving the quality of student performance outcomes
Collects, analyzes, and prepares data for the purpose of interpretation and reporting to district, state, and federal agencies
Provides support for State and District Testing Security and Proctor Training for all Instructional Staff
Manages instructional/curricular digital interfaces
Supports staff in cross curricular integration of literacy and documentation for 502 curriculum alignment (lesson plan development, scope/sequence composition, performance task, and assessment writing)
Demonstrates methods required to perform assignments for the purpose of providing an effective district reading program and addressing the needs of students
Develops and coordinates reading programs cooperatively with classroom teachers for the purpose of supporting teachers and ensuring student success
Evaluates students' abilities in reading skills for the purpose of assisting in the diagnosis of learning disorders, developing remediation plans, and/or evaluating student progress
Furthers personal education through staff development for the purpose of staying current with the latest and best practices and learning new theories and technology
Maintains confidentiality of all information for the purpose of protection of students, staff, parents, and the district
Mentors classroom teachers and support staff in the instructional process
Monitors student progress for the purpose of providing student feedback on a regular basis to students, teachers, and parents
Determines interventions for students diagnosed as "at risk" readers.
Develops RTI Literacy curriculum
Develops, delivers, and evaluates cross-curricular Common Core Literacy professional development in grade-level and departmental Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s), District Professional Development Training Sessions, and State Professional Development Workshops
Designs and conducts model lessons demonstrating cross-curricular integration of the Common CoreLiteracy Standards
Conducts training in the use of diagnostic reading programs
Participates in various meetings for the purpose of receiving and/or presenting information
Prepares materials and related reports (e.g., walkthrough data, curriculum mapping reports, EdInsight reports, e-School/Cognos grading reports, attendance reports, anecdotal records, etc.) to support Professional Learning Community (PLC) work in monitoring student/teacher performance and progress
Provides assistance in selecting and administering valid, reliable reading assessments and screening instruments for the purpose of providing an effective school program to increase students’ reading skills
Supports PLC Leaders in utilizing instructional interfaces
Conducts parent night training workshops
Advises parents and/or legal guardians for the purpose of supporting teachers’ literacy expectations
Solicits, writes, manages, and evaluates literacy grants to support instructional and curricular goals
Serves as the District Representative at State Literacy and State Reading Cadre Committees
Assumes individual responsibilities as assigned by administration for the purpose of improving staff knowledge and supporting students’ instructional needs
