Job Description – NDT Lead Level 1 OR 2 MPI / Nital Etch
Description
The primary role of the NDT technician/Nital Etch technician is to conduct material tests using both Nital Etch inspection as well as Magnetic Particle Inspection. The main goal is to identify material flaws that may affect performance or cause safety issues if not detected. In this particular position, your role is to also run the NDT lab to the utmost standard of quality expected of a NADCAP certified facility. You will set up equipment, accept/reject parts, keep the acid baths (nital etch) and the oil bath (MPI) up to date and free from contaminants. Cleanliness and an eye for detail are greatly important.
Another aspect to this role is also performing Surface Temper Etching Inspection (Nital Etch) for parts prior to MPI when applicable. OJT training for Nital Etch is available but having prior experience in Nital Etch is preferred.
Duties
- Set up and calibrate non-destructive testing equipment.
- Establish techniques, processes, and procedures for proper examination of objects under inspection, ensuring strict adherence to safety regulations.
- Organize and report test results.
- Conduct tests to ensure quality or detect discontinuities (defects) using NDT methods of inspection
- Maintain an MPI solution bath within the range of the required concentration between fluorescent particles and carrier oil.
- Review customer specifications and procedures.
- Write certifications for accept/reject disposition of parts
- Report to MPI level 3 for technique approvals.
- Be prepared and available in the event of customer audits being required.
- Operate and maintain quarterly calibration records for the Oven used post Nital Etching.
Required skills
- The ability to read and interpret work instructions and basic prints and dimensions.
- The ability to use basic inspection tools such as calipers, scales, micrometers, and other NDT specific equipment.
- The ability to locate process/procedure documents via basic computer skills.
- Very high attention to detail while following customer inspection requirements, both when operating non-destructive testing equipment and reviewing test results, images, and data.
- The ability to accept/reject parts based on customer specifications.
- Titrations of acids (for nital etching)
- Ability to lift up to 45lbs.
- Must be able to multitask and have the ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions in written, oral, and diagram form.
- Must be able to prioritize tasks and work at a steady productive pace to keep up with customer deadlines.
- Follow quality policies/procedures of AS9100 and NAS 410.
Experience & Education
- Level 1 or Level 2 NDT- MPI Certification Required including historical OJT records
- Previous non-destructive testing (NDT) experience required
- High School Diploma or GED
- Nital Etch experience is preferred. Nital Etch certification is a plus.
