ASSISTANT PUBLIC HEALTH ENGINEER – CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY GOVERNMENT

Chautauqua County Department of Health is seeking qualified applicants to fill an Assistant Public Health Engineer in the Mayville, NY office. This position is Full-Time at 35 hours per week. An incumbent in this title is responsible for assisting the environmental health program performing work of a professional environmental health engineering nature. This position entails assisting in carrying out any specific phases of the program, advising public officials or individuals on problems requiring professional public health engineering knowledge and judgment, including measures for improvement and compliance with legal requirements and assisting in the promotion of public health through application of environmental health practices. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher-ranking professional employee. Supervision is exercised over lower level technical and clerical staff. Does related work as required. Salary starts at $32.97/hour plus benefits.
Typical Job Duties Include:
· Investigates and makes reports and recommendations on private and public water supplies or onsite wastewater treatment systems, swimming and bathing facilities, stream pollution, sanitary conditions of campgrounds, temporary residences, food service establishments, and general sanitation public health nuisances;
· Consults with water system operators, and other parties concerning the principles, practices and problems related to water systems;
· Maintains records and produces reports concerning water system related data;
· Interprets the results of laboratory examinations of water, sewage and other samples;
· Assists in the instruction of local water plant operators;
· Participates in investigations of environmental health factors related to disease outbreaks and responds to emergencies;
· Confers with local officials relative to public health engineering problems; Performs plan review and special assignments relating to any phase of public health engineering or environmental health as required
This position is being filled on a provisional basis pending the outcome of a future dated Civil Service examination for this title.

Must Meet Minimum Qualifications: Either
A. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Sanitary Engineering, Environmental Engineering or a closely related field, OR
B. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Sanitary Engineering, Environmental Engineering or a closely related field and one (1) year of experience in civil, sanitary, public health or environmental engineering, OR
C. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering, Sanitary Engineering, Environmental Engineering or a closely related field and three (3) years of experience in civil, sanitary, public health or environmental engineering.
Please note: Candidates will need to possess a New York State Engineer in Training Certificate (EIT) within twelve (12) months after appointment, or completion of probationary period whichever is sooner, and during service in this classification.
