Chances are, if you’re checking out this post, you’ve taken a look at several others. So what makes us different? Why should you want to work at DRI? Below, we’ve done our best to answer some of those questions and would love a chance to answer any other questions you may have!

  • What is DRI?

In short, we are a group home for developmentally disabled adults, or as we lovingly call them, the folks. Our mission is to provide exceptional care in a Christian environment. We strive to foster independence, purpose, growth, and happiness in everything that we do for our folks. Quality of care is HUGE, but what is even bigger to us is quality of life.

2. What makes DRI a great place to work?

Our inclusive atmosphere encourages individuality in our employees as well as our folks. Each of us are different, have diverse backgrounds, and our own outlook on life, and our folks are no different. We seek out candidates that have positive attitudes and a teamwork driven mentality. It takes so many incredible people to make DRI a great place for our folks to live and we make it a priority to ensure our staff feel valued and heard. We feel strongly that if we take care of our employees, they take excellent care of our folks and our business.

3. What does a “normal” day in this position look like?

There is not a set schedule for this position since it is a PRN or as needed position.

A typical day in this role begins with a report from the previous shift advising of any necessary updates on the folks, medications, or extra cleaning duties that need to be completed. This is an independent shift which means another staff member will not be present for this shift. This is not a complete list any or all job responsibilities, but encompasses the general duties of a Direct Support Professional.

  • Medication passes
  • Meal preparation for breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Outings as planned (Shopping, movies, outdoor activities, etc.)
  • Supervise or assist if necessary with the folks cleaning duties

A typical weekday (Monday-Thursday) in this role begins with picking the folks up from the Activity Center and returning to the home. The house manager also comes on shift at 4 p.m. so that there can be available staff to assist with evening routines. A typical evening routine consists of

  • Cooking dinner
  • Evening medication passes
  • Showering *most of our folks shower independently and require no assistance at all, however we do have a few folks on campus that require verbal prompts or reminders to ensure that they maintain proper hygiene

This is not a complete list of any or all job responsibilities, but encompasses the general duties of a Direct Support Professional.

4. What does training look like for this position?

Prior to working on the home, new hires complete 6 Modules of Mental Health Wellness for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (MHW-IDD) and 12-Minute Trainer Modules (including Abuse & Neglect, HIPAA, Detecting Depression, & Resident Rights). The computer training modules typically take 8-12 hours depending on the speed at which you work.

CPR Certification class will be scheduled for new hires who are not currently CPR certified and must be completed before working alone. There will be a minimum of 3 days of scheduled training with a fully trained staff member and additional training available if needed. New hires will additionally attend a Medication Class that is taught by our team of Registered Nurses and must be passed off on medications by their 30th day of employment. After training is completed numerous resources and contacts are available if any questions or concerns arise. We encourage our staff to ask questions and strive to continually maintain an open door policy.

Premiums vary based on the age of the candidate and DRI pays $300 per month for medical insurance. After applications are received and screened, candidates that we would like to move forward to the next step in the interview process will receive an email to set up a phone screening. After successfully completing a phone screening, if we choose to move forward with the candidate we will then set up an in person interview that includes a tour of our campus so that applicants have an opportunity to get a clear understanding of who we are and what we do. This process is intended to be a conversation where applicants have an opportunity to ask any questions they may have.
