Job Duties and Responsibilities

As part of the DISH Wireless System Integration Team, this Principal Roaming Engineer will join the team of passionate engineers with a start-up spirit to deploy and debug DISH’s standalone 5G network. This team focuses on the deployment of our Roaming Services by Nokia, BICS, and roaming partners. This team is an operational team working in a live production environment, utilizing CI/CD operations to test, debug, and deploy solutions live. This is a great opportunity for an individual to step on board a growing and financially strong start-up.

In this role, you will: 

• Partner with the Technology Development team and vendors to design solutions of the network functions in a cloud-native environment related to roaming services
• Deploy and support core network functions across a cutting-edge cloud-native standalone 5G network
• Partner with vendor personnel at Nokia, BICS, and roaming partners to set up roaming services and features as well as upgrades
• Participate and Lead discussions in the investigation of innovative 5G technologies to improve the network virtualization infrastructure
• Possess extensive hands-on experience with the 5G Core nodes and roaming call-flows related to S8HR, N9HR, N26, and N14
• Ensure that solutions adhere to defined standards and best practices and/or assist in the development of these standards and best practices
• Lead and mentor other engineers within the team to provide technical guidance and knowledge of the networks in various functional areas
• Able to work in a fast-paced environment, under pressure, with strict deadlines, both as an individual contributor and team player
• Participates in knowledge transfer, documentation, and information sharing while staying abreast of new technology/technical areas

 

Skills, Experience and Requirements

As a successful Principal Roaming Engineer, you will have: 

• Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications or Electrical/Computer Engineering
• 10 years of experience working within the Wireless industry on either the carrier or vendor side of the house
• 5 years of prior work experience in Roaming Engineering or Operations Roles with Mobile Service Providers
• Vast experience in implementing, integrating, and deploying solutions related to roaming services (S6a, S8c, S8u)
• Understanding of Roaming Technologies & Network Design Principles/Implementation including S8HR & N26
• Technical understanding of how roaming is going to work in 5G Standalone Networks (Idle Mode/Connected Mode) as well as N26/N14
• Experience working with Roaming Partners and driving technical implementation/architecture discussions
• Experience working with Technical Customer Care Organizations within the Operator/Partners
• Deep understanding of the Network Components involved in the roaming call flow including the DRA, DEA, HSS, S/PGW, MME, AMF, SMF & UPFs, and how they come into play for the various roaming scenarios
• Hands-on experience with 5G core network design and implementation, including how 5G differs in scope and technology from previous generations
• Troubleshoot SS7, Diameter, and IP traffic with Dish roaming partners to investigate and resolve network issues that are impacting roaming services
• Recommend process and operational changes to prevent the recurrence of service-affecting issues
• Detail verifications of all Roaming Partners by Dish roaming strategy and guidelines
• Documented work experience in the following core functions: SMF / UPF / AMF / DRA / DEA / HSS
• General working knowledge in a Cloud Native environment, with technologies such as AWS/GCP/Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, OpenStack, VMWare, KVM, or EKS
• Familiar with containers and relevant technologies such as Kubernetes, Docker, or AWS/GCP/Oracle Cloud Infrastructure
• Proven work experience in 5G / IMS / LTE
• General understanding of TCP/IP networking and familiarity with TCP, UDP, SCTP, GTP, RADIUS, Mobile IP, SIP, and Diameter protocols
• Experience with Python scripting or any other scripting language (bash, Tcl)
• Knowledge of Protocol Analysis, Wireshark, NetScout, RADCOM, or other similar tools

Salary Ranges

Compensation: $115,500.00/Year - $190,000.00/Year

The base pay range shown is a guideline. Individual total compensation will vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, and competencies; compensation is based on the role's location and is subject to change based on work location. Candidates need to successfully complete a pre-employment screen, which may include a drug test and DMV check.
