Emergency Medicine Advanced Practice Provider (APP) - Critical Care Physician Assistant or Critical Care Nurse Practitioner - PRN
Practice Location: Duke Regional Hospital – Durham, North Carolina
Position Summary-
The Critical Care Physician Assistant (CCPA)/Critical Care Nurse Practitioner (CCNP) is a key member of the Emergency Department Team at Duke Regional. The Critical Care APP is used to their full potential working collaboratively within the Emergency Department to provide direct patient care services, which includes: performing physical exams, collecting and documenting data, conducting diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ordering laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribing appropriate interventions, medications and coordinating the care of patients. The CC APP also provides direct clinical services for critically ill patients with multi-organ trauma or multi-system disease /failure, according to established protocols and utilizes evidence-based clinical practice standards under the supervision of the ED supervising physician.
Duties include-
- Provide direct clinical patient care services for acutely ill and injured patients according to established protocols.
- Perform approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures based upon patient's clinical status.
- Formulate and implement treatment plan for acute illness management in collaboration with the designated supervising physician and/or attending physician.
- Obtain patient health histories and complete physical examinations.
- Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests/procedures.
- Provide medical assessment, diagnostic determination and clinical management necessary to ensure appropriate clinical disposition of Emergency Department patients.
- Perform procedures specific to the work environment after demonstrated competency and within the guidelines of scope of practice and credentialing protocols.
- Initiate necessary emergency interventions in an effort to stabilize patients.
- Document in the patients’ medical record all relevant data including but not limited to results of diagnostic tests; laboratory results; patients’ condition and response to therapies/interventions.
- Utilize prescriptive privileges for prescribing, ordering and or administering drugs within prescribing authority.
- Provide family-centered care by direct contact and consultation with patient, patient’s family members, friends, advocates and others to ensure effective communication of patient status and care plans.
- Accurate and timely completion of all clinical and professional records and documentation to assure compliance with local, state and federal regulatory, licensure and accreditation requirements.
- Work to create a positive work culture within the department and cross-departmental teams.
- Communicate with consulting providers as appropriate to facilitate necessary ongoing care and treatment of patients.
- Assess educational needs of the patient and/or patient’s family and provide culturally sensitive patient/family education interventions as indicated. Use non-technical language when educating patients and families. Document all education in patients’ medical record.
- Ability to work with others in a professional, cooperative and collaborative manner.
Minimum Qualifications to Apply - Education, License, Certification, Experience
Critical Care Physician Assistant-
- Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program. A Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree strongly preferred.
- Requires an unrestricted license issued by North Carolina Medical Board (NCMB) with authorization to practice as a Physician Assistant.
- Must be certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
- BLS certification is required.
- Emergency Medicine experience strongly preferred; relevant experience such as EMT/Paramedic/Medic helpful.
Critical Care Nurse Practitioner-
- Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, with a Master’s degree in Nursing.
- Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. National certification as a Nurse Practitioner required.
- BLS certification required.
- Emergency Medicine experience strongly preferred; RN experience in Emergency Medicine helpful.
Experience-
One year as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in a critical care setting required.
Work Schedule-
The Emergency Department is staffed 24/7 with a mix of physicians and APPs. APP shifts are 10 hours rotating days, nights and weekends.
