What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Accountant position at Dykema?
Dykema Gossett PLLC, a leading national law firm, is recruiting for a Staff Accountant in our Detroit, Michigan office. Start date as soon as possible.
Under the supervision of the Financial Controller, the Staff Accountant is responsible for internal auditing, bank reconciliations, general ledger reconciliations, accounting systems balancing, journal entries, fixed asset system maintenance/reporting, personal property tax filings, use tax filings, client trust, and various special projects. The Staff Accountant will serve as back-up to the Senior Accountant.
Staff Accountant Duties:
- Performs monthly bank reconciliations for all operating and trust bank accounts. Reviews regional bank account reconciliations prepared by other department team members. Records required journal entries for adjustments. Responsible for reconciling cleared checks for all Firm accounts.
- Responsible for daily review of all firm accounts for accuracy against the Accounting System. Monitors accounts for returns (ACH, check) and helps to resolve daily account variances.
- Assist with the accounting systems daily balancing, month-end close cycle and year-end close cycle.
- Coordinates Client Trust transactions for closings and settlements.
- Responsible for reconciliating client credit card payments monthly and resolving issues.
- Enters capital assets into the fixed asset software based on in service date. Runs and records all required journal entries for monthly fixed asset depreciation.
- Responsible for processing quarterly and annual tax payments for all Dykema entities.
- Assist with coordinating and filling all data and document requests related to the financial audits and tax returns.
- Assist with the preparation and filing of all firm personal property tax returns. Assist with preparing monthly and annual use tax filings alone with miscellaneous regional business tax filings.
- Responsible for organizing accounting files (physical and electronic) including tax filings, leases and bank documents.
- Trains new hires on various accounting systems.
- Monthly reconciliation of various balance sheet accounts including corporate card program accounts.
- Completes special projects as requested.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field, or a comparable level of training such as that which may be acquired through additional work experience required.
- Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Must be proficient in accounting software, preferably Aderant.
- Strong communication, time management, and organizational skills.
- Excellent attention to detail required.
- Requires flexibility and ability to prioritize workload effectively.
