Required Qualifications:

- Be responsible for carrying out a wide range of duties associated with laboratory (Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Blood Bank, Microbiology and waived testing) for all testing ordered by providers authorized to order laboratory tests.
- Adhere to WRSU hospital and laboratory policies and procedures on all facets involving the performance of their duties.
- Perform phlebotomy activities including venipuncture and capillary methods on the full spectrum of ages and patient demographics.
- Instruct patients and/or staff on appropriate methods for collection, preservation and transport of samples.
- Operate laboratory equipment, instruments, containers and/or other testing material in performing quantitative and qualitative testing.
- Assure all appropriate testing parameters are met such as temperature, humidity and volumes, etc.
- Prepare calibrators, quality control, reagents, stains and other media required to conduct testing.
- Verify and report results via the laboratory RPMS. May be required to hand write report results, if needed.
- Prior to verifying and releasing any test results, the technologist interprets and evaluates all results. Appropriate action is taken on abnormal/critical
results which may include, but is not limited to re-testing, re-performing QC, notifying the provider, notifying the supervisor of recurring abnormal result or instrument performance.

- Perform preventative maintenance, period inspection and performance of testing equipment such as daily PM's, QC testing, etc. Documents and maintains all PM
and QC data as required per policy.

- Personal contacts include patients, other lab staff and other hospital staff.
- Work primarily in the laboratory setting, but may require activities in the emergency room, adult & pediatric inpatient unit. Protective equipment such as gloves, gowns and eye guard are available at all times to meet OSHA and other employee safety policies.
- Work shall be performed on varied shifts to meet the organizational needs. Work requires standing for long periods of time, walking to different units within the facility, stopping and/or bending to perform testing and may occasionally require lifting of 40/50 lbs boxes of testing supplies.
- Time worked shall be tracked through a weekly time sheet. The time sheet shall be maintained by the supervisor for verification of hours and approval.
- Performance of these duties will be required on varied shifts to meet the organizational needs, including nights, evenings, and weekends.
- Responsible for his/her own reliable transportation.
- Responsible for housing and all other meals and expenses.
- Responsible for fringe benefits and other benefits such as health, retirement, etc.
- Responsible for maintaining satisfactory standards for competence, conduct, appearance and integrity. The quality of work performance of the contractor shall be subject to review.
Technical Requirements:
- Knowledge in the full range of methods, techniques and practices appropriate to the medical technology and their practical application to laboratory work in compliance with The Joint Commission and CMS, CLIA and HIPPA regulations.
- This includes chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, blood bank, serology and microbiology.
- Skill in calibrating and operating analytical instruments sufficient to independently perform recurring tests and analysis.
- Understanding of related disciplines such as microbiology, chemistry, physiology, anatomy and their relationships to medical technology.
- Certification as Medical Technologist. Certified Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT) may be considered at the discretion of the service unit based upon other qualifications and experience noted in this section.
- Adheres to government wide and HHS standards of ethical of conduct and complies with all mandatory training as directed.
Qualifications/Certificatons Required: Medical Technologist 621-046:
- Years of experience: Minimum of (2) two years of experience as a laboratory technician with two (2) years of experience within the respective specialty.
- Minimum Education: A.S. Degree from an Accredited laboratory technician school, Bachelor of Science in Laboratory Technical Sciences degree is preferred.
- Current certification in BLS (Basic Life Support).
- Applicants must have an active, unrestricted and free of disciplinary action license as a Medical Technologist in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico or a Territory of the United States.

Possess sufficient initiative, interpersonal relationship skills, social sensitivity and appropriate professional behavior such that he/she can relate constructively to IHS employees, contractors, vendors and individuals from the Alaskian Indian and Native American community.

Have a valid state driver’s license from any of the 50 United States or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

Not have any work or health restrictions, which could directly or indirectly interfere with the performance of providing services.

Maintain acceptable standards of personal hygiene, grooming and professional attire such that their image as a Federal contractor is compatible with the expectations of the IHS staff.

Be required to utilize the electronic health record for chart documentation (where applicable) after receiving training.

Be sensitive to the unique culture factors of the people they serve, which may include use of an interpreter as necessary in communication of services being rendered. Unique cultural factors that may contribute to the patient’s treatment include: use of their language communications; village and tribal customs; use of traditional healers; isolation; housing conditions and lack of resources.

Have tact and diplomacy while working in stressful situations.
The Contractor(s) may be required to work beyond normal duty hours, on an as needed basis for emergencies.
