As Director of Government Affairs, reports directly to the Deputy General Counsel. Responsible for assisting the Deputy General Counsel in monitoring, and influencing as directed, the legislative and regulatory activity impacting the company in California and across all other U.S. states. Serves as the internal and, as delegated by the Deputy General Counsel, external point person for state government affairs operations and works with management, outside lobbyists, policymakers, staff, and relevant trade associations to advance the company’s policy positions and issue solutions. It is essential the individual develop an overall understanding of the manufacturing, distribution, and sales processes of the alcohol beverage industry. This position will build and maintain relationships with governmental representatives with the goal of advancing and promoting the organization's businesses. .
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- In consultation and coordination with the Deputy General Counsel, represents the company before relevant trade associations.
- Manages relationships and works closely with state and federal advocacy teams of relevant trade associations.
- Creates advocacy and educational material appropriate for a variety of audiences, such as memoranda for company management, fact sheets, position papers, and talking points.
- Identifies issues of public policy and organizational importance, drafts and distributes memos or releases, and generates government and public support.
- Develops, revises, and advises management on legislative and regulatory proposals.
- Monitors and interprets regulatory orders, proposals, and legislation to identify compliance requirements, business opportunities, and threats.
- Leads and supports meetings with public officials as requested and prepares materials in support of such meetings.
- Consults, coordinates, works with, and manages Sacramento and other state contract lobbyists.
- Supports review and analysis of proposed changes in federal and state laws and regulations.
- Supports the execution of company policy priorities, strategy, and workplan in coordination with Deputy General Counsel.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
- Bachelor’s Degree. Bachelor’s Degree plus 10 years of experience substantially in relevant advocacy areas reflecting increasing levels of responsibility, to include serving as staff for public official(s), and professional lobbying experience either with lobbying firm or trade associations.
- Required to travel when necessary.
WHAT WILL SET YOU APART
- A Juris Doctorate plus strong academic record in law school, preferably from leading law school and California State Bar membership plus 8 years of experience substantially in relevant advocacy areas reflecting increasing levels of responsibility, to include serving as staff for public official(s), and professional lobbying experience either with lobbying firm or trade associations.
- Familiarity and/or experience with the alcohol beverage industry.
- Demonstrates flexibility and success working in a fast-paced, change-oriented environment.
- Demonstrate strong analytical and critical thinking skills and business acumen.
- Skilled in negotiations and ability to influence and leverage relationships within and outside the company.
- Experience working as a team player and striving for building consensus.
