Coding Educator
JOB SUMMARY:
The Coding Educator operates as a member of the coding team by performing coding duties and related tasks. Duties will include auditing new coder work, providing one-on-one feedback and education. This may include Surgery, ED, or IP education. This position will also serve as the Coding Staff Educator when coding deficiencies are identified and as a coding expert resource for the department and outside vendors. Coding educator will create and present relevant education to coders and providers as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Trains internal client new coders for proficiency
- Audits new coder work in accordance with proper policies and procedures for regulations, coding guidelines and compliance
- Performs individual feedback and education for student - coders as needed for inpatient, outpatient surgery, ambulatory surgery as well as other disciplines as needed
- Audits vendor quality prior to billing
- Performs data collection and reports data to management
- Creates clear and concise audit reports
- Acts as resource for internal staff and external vendors concerning coding subject matter
- May conducts random retrospective auditing of coding staff, providers, and charge posters in accordance with HIM Coding Compliance Policy and Procedure
- Other duties as assigned
Client Required Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Certification as one of the following required: CPC, CIC, COC, CRC, CPMA, CCS, CCS-P, RHIA, RHIT
- Must be a member in good standing with AHIMA and/or AAPC
- A minimum of three years’ experience in coding, auditing, and education required
- Knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, PCS, Evaluation and Management and Coding Guidelines required
- Must be able to prioritize and organize work
- Must possess professional and effective communication skills
- Must have proficient computer skills to include Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point, and experience with web-ex use
- Must have proficient research skills for coding guidelines and other regulatory guidance
- Must have the ability to maintain composure and professionalism in difficult situations

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Sitting, talking, hearing and near vision are required over 90% of the time, while walking is required frequently throughout the day. Standing is required over 10% of the time. Feeling is required 90% of the time and reaching is required about 50% of the time. Bending, twisting and climbing are required, as in far vision, but only for 10% or less of the time. Low levels of lifting (10 pounds of less) is required about 25% of the time, while medium levels (20 to 40 pounds) of lifting and carrying are required less than 5% of the time. Ability to travel to field sites may be required up to 15% of the time.
WORKING CONDITIONS WHILE PERFORMING ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Over 90% of the time is spent indoors, with protection from weather conditions. Exposure to noise levels that may be distracting or uncomfortable is present in only unusual situations.
