Job Title: ACADEMIC COACH

Department: VETERANS STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

Reports to: DIRECTOR OF VETERANS STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

FLSA: NON-EXEMPT


SUMMARY:

The Academic Coach will work with staff and students at East Central University and with off campus veteran support services and agencies identify, select, and serve veteran students at East Central University by providing vocational, educational, and academic counseling and other academic related services to promote program retention, good academic standing, and graduation.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Collect paperwork and determine the eligibility of prospective participants using guidelines set forth by the US Department of Education.

2. Evaluate coursework transferred to ECU and develop individualized education plans for program participants.

3. Advise and coach program participants with regard to ECU and Department of Veterans Affairs policies and procedures on taking classes and earning credits.

4. Coordinate student record management.

5. Monitor enrollment and identify academic problems and effective solutions and/or interventions as necessary.

6. Provide career counseling and financial/economic literacy instruction to students.

7. Assist students in securing needed campus and community services.

8. Facilitate assistance with appropriate offices/programs for participants with financial aid applications and with Department of Veterans Affairs education benefit options and applications.

9. Encourage and motivate participants, promote program vision, and facilitate the veteran community.

10. Document all services and activities in participant files and in the database.

11. Network with community partners to become familiar with services beneficial to participants.

12. Participate in in-service and other training opportunities.

13. Identify, select, and retain eligible participants.

14. Assist Program Coordinator as needed.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Good communication skills, written and verbal, are required. Good computer and multitasking skills are required. Attention to detail is essential. Ability to relate to veterans, community persons, and staff of the University is required. Must demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and adhere to professional ethics. Knowledge of University policies and procedures is preferred. Knowledge of GI Bill programs and application procedures is preferred. Belief in the value of higher education and the ability to pass that belief on to others.


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

A Bachelor’s Degree required in education, counseling, or related area is required. At least two years’ experience in counseling or advising adults and conducting case management is required. Experience working with disadvantaged and/or handicapped individuals, and diverse populations is preferred. Prior TRIO experience is preferred. Veteran or experience working with military personnel is preferred.
