What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bulker Driver position at Eastern Missouri Concrete?
JOB IDENTIFICAITON
Deliver bulk products from the terminal to the ready mix concrete plant.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION
- Inspect the truck, including checking fluids such as oil and anti-freeze in the morning in accordance with D.O.T. regulation.
- Contact the bulk fleet dispatcher for assignment and possible purchase order number.
- Drive in a safe manner to the destination assigned by the bulk fleet dispatcher.
- If the destination is a cement terminal, upon arrival climb the ladder on the trailer and open the hatch in the center on the top for loading. Spot the hatch opening under the loading chute. Go into the office and give them the purchase order number and the destination plant number. After loading, pull away from the loading chute, stop the truck, go to the rear of the trailer, climb the ladder, close and secure the hatch.
- Drive safely to your delivery destination. Upon arrival, consult the plant supervisor as to what bin the load is to be placed in.
- Begin pressurizing the trailer. While this is happening, attach the discharge hose to the trailer discharge pipe and to the bin-receiving pipe and turn on the dust collector.
- When the trailer is pressurized, open the valves necessary to discharge the product.
- Keep an eye on the pressure gauges and the dust collector on the plant to be sure no dust is escaping. Watch the bin highlight so you do not overfill the bin.
- When the trailer is empty, stop pressurizing the trailer, turn off the dust collector blower and turn on the dust collector shaker. Bleed off the air in the trailer and disconnect the hose from the trailer and the bin pipe. Store the hose in the tube carrier; turn off the dust collector shaker.
- Take a copy of the product ticket to the plant supervisor and ask the person for an inventory report. Phone the bulk fleet dispatcher for your next assignment and report the inventory information you were given.
- At the end of the day, drive safely to your starting point. Make sure you have a starting time for the next workday.
- If you have worked 12 hours or more, fill out a log book report for that day.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to take orders, instructions, and guidance from supervisors and management.
- Must be able to read, write and speak English.
- Must be able to do simple math, such as addition and subtraction.
- Must have valid Department of Transportation certified commercial drivers license. Class "A" commercial driver's license, with Air Brake endorsement.
- Must be able to pass a Federal Department of Transportation drug screen and physical.
- Must maintain driving record in accordance with Federal and State Motor Carrier regulations and company policy.
- Must be able to operate vehicle and perform tasks in a safe manner.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS This moderately strenuous work. The bottom of the seat is approximately 50 inches from the ground. The first step is two feet off the ground, with the second step one foot higher. Usually a bar is provided to help the driver pull himself into the cab.
- Each truck has a clutch with five to six gears, which the driver must go through for each stop and start procedure when driving. The driver must have coordination between hands and feet to accomplish their procedures. This could average well over 100 times per day. The amount of pressure used in pushing in the clutch with the left leg is around 60 pounds of force.
- Excellent defensive driving skills. Ability to clean all areas on vehicle, climb ladder to inspect load. Punctuality in showing for work.
- Drivers must wash and clean their trucks with brushes and a hose. This requires a fair amount of climbing on the truck.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
- Drivers work outdoors the majority of the time. Weather conditions such as temperatures, moisture, and other conditions have a significant impact on the job. Therefore, drivers must tolerate, with or without reasonable accommodations, being exposed frequently to extreme weather conditions.
- There are high noise levels and significant vibrations associated with this job, this is caused by the truck and other construction equipment. The driver must be able to tolerate, with or without reasonable accommodation, intermittent exposure to noise, vibrations and other aggravating conditions at or around the plants.
- There are other physical hazards that endanger life, health, or bodily injury such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, falls, environmental conditions, moving equipment and other hazards.
- There is also exposure to cement, fly ash, dust, diesel fuel, and other substances which may cause bums, be toxic or explosive.I understand the description of this job and the essential functions are given above.
