SUMMARY
The Systems Proposal Manager is responsible for creating timely, accurate, and complete quotations for all automated welding, cutting, and marking systems. The Systems Proposal Manager will complete research for technical solutions to best match customize system requirements from requests from Sales and their customers. The Systems Proposal Manager will ensure company interests and risks are managed during the pre-sale and fulfillment phases of a project.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Communicate with customers and Sales during the pre-sale stages to understand system requirements, provide pre-sale responses, proposal statuses, and system solution information in coordination with Engineering, Advanced Technology, and Laser Applications Lab Engineers.
- Produce systems quotations based on descriptions and catalogue pricing for standard products, and on input from the Systems Engineering staff and supervisor for cost, description, and schedule data for non-standard items.
- Obtain supporting data for custom system solutions from self-engineering analysis, input from Engineering, and input from suppliers.
- Through own cost analysis and with input from the Systems Department and the Cost Accountant, establish the as-quoted costing for the standard and non-standard product portions of systems quotation.
- Ensures the customer’s and our corporate business interests and risks are well-managed throughout the pre-sale and quoting process.
- This includes ensuring proposed equipment is compatible with the associated application and the customer’s operational concerns.
- Preparing compliance documents in response to complex RFQs.
- Establishing appropriate general considerations for acceptance testing.
- Coordinating review and approval of proposals.
- Reviewing customer’s contractual agreements.
- Coordinating approval of payment terms with corporate credit manager.
- Manage and maintain historical quoting files.
- Complete one-time projects involving analysis of past sales, surveys of competitors and their products, and market research. Analyze and provide input for catalog pricing for laser and systems products.
- Provide project support to Engineering and Operations Departments, including.
- preparation of quote, sales order, and financial package for review at project kick-off meetings
- setting the as-quoted cost elements in the earned value report
- ensuring necessary changes to contractual documents are processed in a timely manner.
- Represent the Systems Department’s sales administration interests on company-wide business systems projects.
- Prepare quick turn-around CAD descriptive sketches to support proposals.
- Produce presentations for customers and present them via web teleconference, on-site customer visits, and in-house customer visits emphasizing technical knowledge of products and service core competencies.
- Provide technical explanations on system configurations and application solution inputs as required for Sales and Marketing for generating communication collateral.
- Identify and validate outside vendors to supplement in-house product development for custom subassemblies on a project-by-project basis.
- Provide project management support for System Engineering and Manufacturing Departments.
- Provide technical information support to Engineering, Advanced Technology, and Laser Applications Lab Engineers.
- Perform post-sales analysis of cost, features, and performance of custom system components.
- Some travel is required.
- Other projects and tasks as assigned by the company from time to time.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- This position will supervise two to four direct reports with procedures providing guidance for twenty to thirty employees.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- BS Degree in Mechanical/Electrical/Material Science Engineering or equivalent required.
- A minimum of five years’ experience in a product management, engineering, or applications position.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of three years supervisory experience required.
- 2 to 4 years’ experience in product sales, product engineering, customer service or applications position in a custom product environment
- Extensive direct customer and Sales engagement is required.
- Strong organizational skills are required.
- Excellent customer service approach, can-do attitude, and good people skills.
- Excellent communications skills, including writing and presenting technical product and service information to engineers, operators, and senior managers.
- Ability to research and solve technical problems for standard product solutions and customer’s unique specifications including reasonable judgment in assessing adequacy of proposed solution to customer’s requirements.
- Ability to analyze contractual fulfillment obligations and compare proposed systems equipment to those obligations.
- Strong analytical ability in project cost research and analysis.
- Superior time management and follow-though with ability to accomplish day-to-day tasks while continuing to make progress, and bring to completion, longer term projects.
- An initiative-taker with the ability to work independently with limited direction.
- Experience in specifying, operating, designing, or maintaining equipment for industrial production and automation.
