Eden Youth Family Center is a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded in 1977 with a mission to provide and support a comprehensive array of services for children, youth, and families throughout Alameda County. EYFC's vision is to serve as a hub of critical services which enhances the economic, social, education, and health needs of south Alameda County in particular. EYFC strives to improve existing services and add new programs as needed for the individuals it serves daily. Our current programs include:

- Hayward Coalition for Healthy Youth

- Project New Start Tattoo Removal

- Youth Advisory Council

POSITION SUMMARY

The Peer Educator is responsible for supporting the day-to-day management and activities of a substance abuse prevention program. The Peer Educator will facilitate coping skills/ prevention class to middle and high school students and provide additional support to maintenance and sustainability of the program.

JOB FUNCTIONS AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Coping skills/Prevention Facilitator (80%)

● Teach coping skills/prevention to middle and high school students

● Administer pre/post surveys from students

● Work with youth group to disseminate successes of the program

● Outreach to school administrators to expand the program

● Communicate effectively with community members from multi-cultured and disadvantaged backgrounds.

● Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Community Relations/ Administrative (20%)

● Publicize activities and events throughout the community via social media.

● Attends appropriate outside meetings, events, and tabling opportunities to promote the program and activities.

● Manage Outreach and Marketing Campaigns via social media as well as other marketing strategies.

● Perform other duties as assigned and agreed upon by the parties involved.

● Communicate effectively with youth from multi-cultured and disadvantaged backgrounds.

● Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)

● Ability to give presentations to groups such as local parents, other service providers, local service clubs, etc. Write and communicate clearly.

● Work with minimal supervision.

● Experienced in working with youth and/or families to access health-related services; and, to follow up to ensure that youth and families have accessed services successfully.

● Strong public speaking and meeting facilitation skills to teach classes and workshops to students, parents, and at large community events.

● Knowledge of available health-related services in the community is a plus.

● With supervision from the program manager and coordinator, makes logical and judicious decisions and provides workable solutions to problems; weighs alternative decisions and reduces outcome risks.

● Strong interpersonal skills: ability to use collaborative approaches to build support for objectives; build positive relationships within and outside the agency.

● Effective and timely dissemination of information and publicity for activities and events.

● Goal and result orientation; ability to meet time commitments and follow through to task/job completion.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

● Provide evidence of adequate preparation, background, or experience for the position.

● Public Speaking Experience

● High School Diploma/ College Degree Preferred

● Two (2) years of directly related work experience in a service capacity in the nonprofit or public sector preferred.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS / EXPECTATIONS

● Must have a California Class C driver’s License in the State of California

● Reliable vehicle during work hours

● Fingerprinting and background check and TB Testing

● Availability to work evenings and weekends on occasion.

● Ability to work with youth and families from a variety of backgrounds from underserved communities.

● Ability to lead others in completing assigned tasks with minimal direction from supervisors.

● Must be able to stand, sit, bend, twist, and stoop, up to two hours a day. Lifting of up to

10 lbs. and some reaching above head occasionally.

● Must manage personal time to accomplish multiple assigned tasks in cooperation with team members.

● Must be able to lift 25 lbs. Some bending, stooping, stairs, and reaching required.

● Ability to balance and prioritize competing needs and demonstrate/promotes flexibility in a changing environment.

● Ability to act as a change agent by promoting and embracing responsible change to further the organization’s mission.

● Effectively conveys information and expresses thoughts and facts. Demonstrates effective use of listening skills and displays openness to other people’s ideas and thoughts. Adjusting communication style to suit the situation and audience.

● Models’ inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, students, and the community.

● Sets and exemplifies high ethical standards and holds self and others accountable for conduct.

● Interacts appropriately with all community partners and staff members without regard to individual characteristics—Fosters respect for all individuals and points of view.

● Other related duties as specified by the Substance Use Prevention Manager and

Executive Director.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $23.50 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
