The Director of Staff Development:
- Implements, schedules, and evaluates mandatory in-service program hours for CNA’s and RNA’s in Skilled Nursing and community wide mandatory in-service programs.
- Coordinates refresher training, as necessary, for assigned team members and licensed professional personnel.
- Applies for and maintains program approvals for Staff Development orientation programs and in-service training programs through the Department of Public Health Services with the State of California.
- Maintains records and data in a neat, organized manner for prompt retrieval.
- Uses Relias Learning system as appropriate to enhance learning opportunities and ensure compliance with regulations.
- Plans, schedules, and posts a monthly calendar of education programs in a timely manner.
- Prepares lesson plans containing objectives, course content, method of instruction, and method of evaluation for each class scheduled and completed.
- Observes and teaches resident’s rights policies and processes.
- Assists and trains all Care Center team members on the use of the Electronic Health Records system, considered superuser.
- Assess skill levels and learning needs of CNA’s and RNA’s through direct observation in clinical rounds and makes interventions as necessary; incorporates identified needs in training delivery.
- Performs annual skills evaluation of CNA’s and Licensed Nurses per regulatory guidelines.
- Ensures team members maintain appropriate First Aid and CPR/BLS certificates.
- Participates in the nursing team member performance appraisal process by providing attendance records and observation of the nursing personnel performance to the Director of Nursing. Supports the Director of Nursing with input for team member evaluations.
- Evaluates resident and all team members training needs and provides Health Care Administrator (HCA) and Director of Nursing (DON) with comprehensive recommendations concerning the educational/training needs of the licensed professional personnel.
- Recruits from outside sources to provide up-to-date education programs. Coordinates confidential employee health files for all community team members. Coordinates annual physical exams and TB screening.
- Administers and coordinates Hepatitis B vaccination program Coordinate training or train team members on First Aid and CPR/BLS annually in accordance with regulatory standards.
- Maintain CPR/BLS and First Aid training files and update annually.
- Demonstrates consistent ability to work cooperatively with residents, nursing supervisors, licensed nurses, nursing assistants, nursing students, interns, physicians, families, consultants, community agencies, and ancillary service personnel.
- Promotes safe environment and safety awareness within the community, which includes fire, disaster, and accident prevention, maintenance of sanitary conditions and assurance that all nursing personnel understand their roles in the event of a disaster or other disruption of services.
Other Job Functions
- Serves on, participates in, and attends Infection Control, Quality Assurance and Safety Committee, and other committees as assigned by the Director of Nursing and/or Health Care Administrator.
- Assists in quarterly assessments as needed (i.e., AIMS, restraint and smoking)
- Completes reporting requirements for Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement, Survey Process, Daily COVID reporting, DHPPD staffing and projects staffing needs.
- Manages skilled nursing Infection Control Program by tracking trends, identifying statistical occurrence rates, and recommending interventions per regulations and guidelines that govern infection control when the role of the Infection Preventionist Nurse is vacant.
- Observes and teaches infection control policies, in collaboration with the Infection Preventionist Nurse.
- Attends and participates in continuing educational programs designed to keep abreast of professional changes and to maintain license and CPR certification on a current status.
- Serves as coordinator for nursing students and interns.
- Assists nursing staff on the floor and assumes floor nurse duties in the event of an emergency or staffing shortages.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Current license by the State of California as a licensed nurse, RN/LVN.
- Two to Five years demonstrated ability in nursing administration and or supervision in a long-term care setting.
- CPR/First Aid trained instructor, or train to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
- DSD Certification or obtain upon hire, no more than 6 months of hire.
- Sensitivity and knowledge of working with older adults and the aging process essentials. Must be a motivated and independent individual who can organize the workload so that all functions are completed appropriately.
