What are the responsibilities and job description for the Teacher-Detention Center position at Elmcrest Children's Center?

The role of the teacher is to provide educational services to youth that enter non secure detention. Due to frequent change in the population, and the ages of the youth served, individualizing educational programming is necessary. The position reports to the Director of Detention Services.
Responsibilities:
- The teacher will assess individual students’ needs and make contact with students’ school districts to obtain IEPs and school assignments.
- The teacher will plan academics for youth to supplement individual school district assignments as well as encourage interactive group learning.
- The teacher will plan curriculum to accommodate each student’s educational and developmental needs, and make adjustments when needed.
- The teacher will promote a positive educational environment, allowing youth to experience success in the classroom.
- The teacher will model and encourage effective communication between all staff members.
- The teacher will attend bi-weekly team meetings to present students’ progress and needs and collaborate regarding any struggles in the classroom.
- The teacher will meet weekly with the program supervisor and/or shift supervisor and case manager to discuss, reflect and problem solve issues relative to students and the classroom.
- The teacher will meet weekly with the Director of Detention Services to discuss, reflect and problem solve issues related to the responsibilities listed above.
- The teacher will be certified in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention.
- The teacher will provide for a 6 hour school day, 5 days/week, year round. There is no school on observed holidays.
Qualifications:
- NYS teacher certification required.
- Valid NYS Drivers License and a driving record acceptable by the agency insurance carrier.
- Ability to work independently and to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to perform in a motivational and professional capacity.
- Solid understanding of the client population, agency policies and program operations.
