JOB DESCRIPTION: Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.

Seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow for a collaborative project between the Ortlund and Calvert laboratories at Emory University School of Medicine. Research will be focused on functional modulation of the nuclear receptor transcription factor Liver Receptor Homolog-1 (LRH-1) as it relates to metabolic and inflammatory diseases.

Candidate would be tasked with:

  1. Mechanism - assessing the mechanistic basis of small molecule-driven activation of Nuclear Receptors and
  2. Drug Design - developing synthetic modulators of Nuclear Receptor activity.

This project will utilize an array of techniques including but not limited to in vivo & in vitro functional assays, structural biochemistry, ADME/PK and is poised to leverage campus-wide resources at Emory - in biochemistry, clinical medicine, ‘omics, and data science.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.

Preferred Qualifications: Candidate should have Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Structural Biology, or related discipline and a proven track record of publications in the field. Candidate should have experience in cell culture, protein expression & purification, and structural biology approaches including x-ray crystallography and/or cryo-EM. Experience in small molecule drug design or computational approaches preferred but not required. Ideal candidate would be motivated, possess excellent written and oral communication skills and possess a strong desire and ability to work as a team in a collaborative environment.
