Position Objective: Responsible for delivering care to people supported by utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation. The Registered Nurse will effectively interact with people supported, significant others, residential staff, CDS staff, and health team members while maintaining all standards of professional nursing.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
- To support the philosophy of the agency mission, vision, values, and strategic plan.
- Completion of nurse trainer course and certification as requested by DON.
- Adherence to Illinois Rule 116, provide medication authorization training to unlicensed staff following Illinois Rule 116 standards and EP!C standards.
- Supervision of and responsibility for nursing tasks delegated to unlicensed staff.
- Participate in on-call and CDS medication pass rotation with other nurses.
- Use the nursing process by demonstrating appropriate assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the person's care, as evidenced by observation and reporting by the person, family, and staff members.
- Assess the person to collect and document their current health status and medical history. Make accurate and ongoing assessment of their status responding and documenting appropriately.
- Set priorities for nursing action in a logical sequence according to person's needs and formulate a plan of care by the appropriate selection of Nurse Practice Standards.
- Perform ongoing assessments and revise the plan of care based on new data and the person's condition.
- Accurately document care to include but not limited to nursing intervention, the person's response to care provided, needs, problems, capabilities, limitations, and progress toward goals. Documentation includes evidence of appropriate teaching with those needed and ensuring needed instructions is noted in the medical record.
- Communicate with the physician regarding the person's needs, the nursing assessments, and recommendations as needed, as evidenced by feedback and observations.
- Collaborate with other nurses and health team members to ensure the person's well-being as evidenced by feedback from the person, their family, and staff.
- Teach the person, their family, significant others, and staff appropriate health information in a timely manner and share written material as evidenced by feedback and observation.
- Perform direct care, using established procedures, policies, and standards as evidenced by feedback and observation.
- Administer medications according to policy and procedure.
- Observe and document a person's responses to medications/treatments.
- Demonstrate the ability and appropriate technical skills when administering treatments and procedures in accordance with physician's orders, policy, and procedure.
- Demonstrate necessary skills and knowledge to provide care for people according to policy, procedure, regulations, and site specific competencies.
- Demonstrate ability to handle emergency situations in a prompt, precise, and professional manner.
- Provide personal care to ensure comfort and well-being while acknowledging physiological and psychological needs.
- Perform indirect care, using established procedures, policies, and standards as evidenced by feedback and observation.
- Communicate pertinent information by phone, fax, email, and electronic programs to the appropriate people in a timely manner to include people supported, guardians, and needed EP!C team members.
- Demonstrate accurate and timely documentation (written and electronic) according to guidelines.
- Accurately transcribe physician orders according to policy and procedure.
- Maintain a clean, neat, and safe environment for people and staff.
- Ensure that supplies and equipment necessary for care are stored in an organized and efficient manner.
- Demonstrate correct and safe technique in the use of equipment according to specific product information.
- Ensure that medications/treatments are kept in a secure and safe location.
- Follow appropriate procedure for obtaining and returning or cleaning/disposing of equipment and supplies.
- Participate in economical utilization of supplies and ensure that equipment is maintained in a clean and safe manner.
- Adhere to administrative system/nursing service policies.
- Remain conscientious regarding personal hygiene and comply with regulations.
- Comply with specific agency and DHS policies and procedures concerning safety.
- 100% attendance to mandatory skill updates as required.
- Communicate with people supported, teammates from all departments, management, families and others in a courteous and professional manner.
- Contribute to and maintain a healthy and productive work environment.
Marginal Responsibilities
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- As mandated reporter, ensure that all allegations of abuse and neglect are reported as required.
Education/Experience Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Valid registration as a Registered Nurse.
- Completion of relevant state Board of Nursing approved.
- Current AHA Healthcare Provider Training (BCLS).
- 1 year experience in medical nursing.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience considered.

- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Operates general nursing equipment.
Work Environment
- Work may occur in the following settings: Home, Office, Classroom, Site, Group Homes, or Community.
- Participate in a 24 hour on-call system.
- Work hours/days are full-time and exempt status. Flexibility is a requirement to accommodate various Program, contractual, personnel and organizational needs.
- Will be required to drive a motor vehicle (EP!C's and employee's) as part of his/her employment responsibilities with EP!C. A valid Illinois Driver's License and insurance is required and must be maintained at all times while employed by EP!C.
